Introduction
Engineered building complete! Hey,that building is really tall! Maybe fifty or
sixty feet. Have you ever seen a skyscraper? Have you ever BEEN on a
skyscraper? Guess how they made it. Engineering! You need
tools, materials, and other unique stuff to build. And your just about to find
out how to be a builder and maybe become a pro one!
People building a house. That's what you might
become!
To engineer you need to have tools. Here are some basic and popular tools. The
Screwdriver, hammer, wrench, drill, and more. My favorite is the Drill. You use
the drill like a screwdriver, except it is automatic. Tools are usually made out
of metal or steel. What is your favorite tool? You sometimes use a pen or a
pencil to mark something like how long something is. Difference is really
important.A Screw has a very sharp point and it has groves that swirl
around the long part. Screws and Screwdrivers are very different. You use
the Screwdriver to fasten the Screws into the material. The Screws hold the
structure together. That is a example of a difference. You use tools often and
they are important.

Things to Build
There are many things to build. We need shelter in the world to help us
survive. Here are three things that are important in are lives.
Shelfs, benches, tables, and so on. All three things I just talked about hold
stuff because that is what there meant for!Things we build are tall to live in,
low to sit in and just to use in are life. They usually have good balance
because they need good balance so they don't fall over! Balance keeps things
stable. I like the work bench because you use it to build things. Things to build
are very important. Many things to build are important because we use them
in our lives. Hold on though,we still have more to go!

An example of shelter. A house is
one of the uses of shelter and is
also something you build.
Sizes of Wood
Page 5
This is a piece of wood that was measured
to 4 ft. by 10 in.
First you have to know that wood and lumber come from trees. If we didn't
have trees,we would not have stuff like homes, buildings, and other important
things in our lives. You have to make the wood the right size, but I need to tell
you something, the size is never perfect. Sizes of wood can be long or short
and when we talk about sizes of wood we mean the length of wood. When
you talk about length it's how long or short the size is of what your using.
Let's start out with some basic sizes of wood. Maybe 3 by 6,7 by 9 and so on.
Wood is just material and materials are just usually straight long boards
that we use to build stuff. We will talk about materials in the next chapter.
But remember, the size is never perfect!
Materials
You NEED materials to build!!! If you don't have materials you can't build
anything. Some basic materials are lumber, wood, bark and so on. Like I said in
chapter three, materials are long and straight for the purpose of building
things. You can make the material short though sometimes. My favorite
material is lumber. You would probably want to use the right materials. For
example. If I was building a dining room table,I would probably want to use
wood right? Not stone. As I said in the beginning, materials are very
important because you need them to build your structure. Now you know the
basics for engineering. I hope you learned a lot about engineering!!!
Page 6
A building being built by wood.
Remember,wood is a material!
Here is an example of lumber and wood. They both have the
same sandpaperish,or rough surface on the top, bottom, and
the sides.
As you can see,the screwdriver has a handle at
the top and a shape that matches the screws at
the bottom of it so it can fasten the screw.
Right in this picture you see a building. That is
something you can build. The people who built that
used screws and bolts to keep it together and a
screwdriver to fasten the screws.
Here in this picture are some pieces of wood
that have been measured of size and are
all the same size. The size is 3 ft. by 1
ft.,or three feet by one foot.

A piece of wood or another object
that is similar to wood, like lumber
Material
Drill A tool used for making holes, like a
screwdriver
Wood The hard substance that is used in
building,known as a material
Workbench A strong table used by someone who
works with tools
Tool A device (for example,a
hammer)used to build by hand
Pen or pencil Both used to mark the
length of how long or short
something is
Measure To measure the length of a
material you use to build
Building To put together a building.
Like a house or a bench.
