INTRODUCTION
• The term environment means surroundings and is
generally used as an abstract concept. The
surroundings may be natural, man-made, physical,
chemical or biotic.
• The growth, behaviour and life history of an
organism, are therefore, influenced by the
environment in which they live.
MEANING
• ENVIRONMENT : It refers to the sum to the
total of conditions which surround man at a
given point in space and time.
• ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES: are the scientific
study of the environmental system & the
status of its inherent or induced changes on
organism.
NATURE
• Environmental studies deal with every issue
that affect an organism.
• It is essentially a multidisciplinary approach
that bring about an integrity.
SCOPE
• Environment is a subject matter not only science
but also social, humanities, management.
• Save environment for present and future
generation
• Protect and preserve environmental resources.
IMPORTANCE
• To clarify modern environmental concepts.
• To know the more sustainable way of living.
• To use natural resources more efficiently.
• To aware and educate people regarding
environmental issues.
Need for public awareness
• To protect the environment
• To take active role in protecting the
environment
• To aware people regarding environment with
the help of mass media
Natural resources
• It refers to any form of energy or matter
essential for the fulfillment of physiological,
socio economical, and cultural needs, both at
the individual level and that of the
community.
• Ex: Water, soil, air, minerals, coal, forest etc.
Renewable and non renewable
resources
• Renewable resources: is a natural substance
that their supply replenishes naturally or can
be sustained.
Ex: sunlight, wind etc
• Non renewable resources: is a natural
substance that is not replenished with the
speed at which it is consumed.
Ex: Fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum
Use and over-exploitation/utilization
of various resources consequences
A) Deforestation
• Trees are cut down
• Land is used for settlements, cultivation etc
• Construction of dams for irrigation facility
• Resulting in damage to habitat.
Continue…
B) Green house gas increase
• Industrial revolution increases carbon dioxide
emission rapidly
• Emission from automobiles
• Resulting in global warming
Continue…
C) Water pollution
• Industries are situated beside water bodies
• Pollutants are discharged into water bodies
• Water pollution occurs
• Affects aquatic plants and organisms
Continue…
D) Soil erosion
• Soil erosion is increased by more than 40%
• Deforestation, construction of roads,
urbanization etc are causes
Role of an individual in conservation
of natural resources
A) Conversation of water
B) Conversation of energy
C) Conversation of soil
Equitable use of resources for
sustainable lifestyles
• Reduction of the unsustainable and unequal use
of resources, and control of our population
growth are essential for the survival of our nation
and indeed of human kind everywhere.
• ‘Development’ has not reached them and they
are often unjustly accused of ‘exploiting’ natural
resources. They must be adequately
compensated for the removal of the sources to
distant regions and thus develop a greater stake
in protecting natural resources.
Continue…
• There are several principles that each of us can
adopt to bring about sustainable lifestyles. This
primarily comes from caring for our Mother Earth
in all respects.
• A love and respect for Nature is the greatest
sentiment that helps bring about a feeling for
looking at how we use natural resources in a new
and sensitive way. If we respect our nature’s
wealth we cannot commit acts that will deplete
our life supporting systems.
