What is ERCP
Think of it this way:
Endoscopy: We use a long, flexible tube with a camera
attached (an endoscope) that is gently guided
through your mouth, esophagus, and stomach into
the first part of your small intestine (the duodenum).
This allows us to directly visualize these areas.
Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography: Once the
endoscope reaches the opening of the bile and
pancreatic ducts, a thin catheter is passed through
the endoscope and into these ducts. A contrast dye is
then injected, which makes the ducts visible on X-ray
images. This helps us identify any blockages,
narrowing, or other abnormalities.
Why is ERCP Performed?
Gallstones in the bile duct: These can cause pain,
jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), and infection
Tumors of the bile ducts, pancreas, or gallbladder:
ERCP can help in diagnosing and staging these cancers.
ERCP is a valuable tool for diagnosing and treating a range of conditions, including:
Strictures (narrowing) of the bile or pancreatic ducts:
These can be caused by inflammation, scarring, or tumors.
Pancreatitis: Especially when caused by gallstones or
ductal issues
Bile leaks: Following gallbladder surgery or other procedures
What to Expect During the ERCP Procedure
1. Preparation: Before the procedure, you’ll receive
specific instructions, which may include fasting for
several hours. We will also discuss your medical
history and any medications you’re taking.
3. The Procedure: The endoscope is carefully inserted
through your mouth. You might feel some pressure but
usually no pain. Once the endoscope is in the duodenum,
the catheter is guided into the bile and pancreatic ducts,
and the contrast dye is injected. X-rays are taken to
visualize the ducts
At our clinic in Chandigarh, your comfort and safety are our top priorities. Here’s a
general overview of what you can expect:
2. Sedation: ERCP is typically performed under sedation to
help you relax and minimize discomfort. You’ll be
monitored closely throughout the procedure.
4. Treatment (if needed): If any abnormalities are
found, we can often treat them during the same
procedure. This might involve:
-Removing gallstones: Using specialized instruments
-Taking biopsies: For further examination under a microscope.
-Placing stents: To open up narrowed ducts and allow drainage
5. Recovery: After the procedure, you’ll be monitored
in a recovery area until the sedation wears off. You
might experience mild throat discomfort or bloating,
which usually subsides quickly. We will provide you
with detailed discharge instructions.
Minimally invasive: Avoids the need for open
surgery in many cases.
Effective diagnosis and treatment: Allows for
direct visualization and intervention within the
bile and pancreatic ducts.
Benefits of ERCP:
Relief from symptoms: Can effectively alleviate
pain, jaundice, and other complications.
