Errors
Deviant form of language unacceptable by the
speaker of the standard version because of its
deviation from the accepted norm.
Types of Errors
Inter-lingual:
That arise from
conflict between
the TL and L1.
Intra-lingual:
While Intra-lingual are
those the learners
encounter in the TL.
E.X:
1- Overgeneralization.
2- False analogies.
Other researchers contend that errors categorized as:
Unique:
That are neither
developmental
nor interference.
Interference:
That are reflect L1
structure in the
speech of L2.
Developmental:
That are similar to L1
errors.
Sources of Error
• The Learners
• Teaching Materials or Methods
• Difficulties inherent in the language
• Interference from LI and L2
• The Learners:
Errors caused by the learner's innate ability to learn language from
hypotheses which are tested and manifest themselves in the formation of
wrong analogies by over-generalization after observing some paradigms.
• Teaching Materials or Methods:
Errors caused by the teaching process itself. Certain types of teaching
techniques increase the frequency of over-generalized structure.
• Difficulties inherent in the language:
Errors caused by the complexity of a particular item being learnt, and the
difficult structures inherent within the target language.
• Interference from LI and L2:
Errors caused by the negative transfer from the L1 to the L2.
Making errors are a natural and unavoidable
part of this process. And the teacher should see
before consider error making as an integral part
of learning process.
