Abstract The heritage of Ancient Egypt reflects many continued and still existing habits and
traditions. Among these habits are body, hand, foot, face and hair care. The Ancient Egyptians
were particularly concerned with cleanliness and grooming. Personal cleanliness was not only a
source of good health but a sign of rank and social class. There are few scenes expressing personal
grooming in Ancient Egypt; those displaying foot care were even more rare and uncommon.
The aim of this paper is to explore the nature of the scenes expressing foot care in Ancient Egypt;
identify and describe the routines of foot care; recognize the people involved and mention the
implements used. This paper employs a descriptive and analytical methodology.
Through studying the very few scenes from various periods and sites, this study concludes that
there are only twelve scenes of foot care in Ancient Egypt from Abu Seir, Saqqara, Beni Hassan,
El Hammamiya, Thebes and Abu Simble. The findings reveal that there are three actions of foot
care, namely, foot washing, foot massage and reflexology, as well as a pedicure that is very
similar to what is practiced in modern times. There are specific people involved in foot care in

Cliches like this are what society is starting to grow bored with. Many stories go with the same
classic image of the portrayals of typical character roles. Plot structures are becoming more and
more transparent with no real substance to the character s development or anything substantial to
the plot. However, some novelists are starting to branch off from that stereotypical structure into
something that differentiates themselves. Ray Bradbury, known as one the best, if not the best,
science fictionwriters of our time wrote one particular short story, A Sound of
Thunder. This piece is about a common science fiction topic, time travel. However, instead of
glorifying the wonders of time travel and the possibilities of what could be considered an idealistic
dream machine, Bradbury shows the consequences of dabbling with space and time.
Exploring themes of death, fear, and drastic change, Bradbury was no longer part of the cliche
bubble of science fiction. Another piece that greatly differentiated itself from other works of
similar topics was Aldous Huxley s piece Brave New World. This piece is satire of the societal

As i stepped out onto the sand I could feel the warm sand between my toes and i could hear the

Upon reading and reflecting on the poem Snake by D.H. Lawrence, I couldn t help but feel like
the poem hearkens back to Emily Dickinson s poems A Narrow Fellow in the Grass and even A
Bird, Came Down the Walk. Like Dickinson s poems there is a recognition of not only the beauty
and majesty that is in nature but also the danger that lurks in the unknown. Lawrence s Snake, like
Dickinson s poems, utilizes personification, not only to connect humankind to nature, but also to
elevate the serpent to an almost human level. I will focus on the poem Snake by D.H Lawrence
and explore the ways the speaker in the poem uses this personification, sound devices, allusion,
language and even structure to convey the speakers reverence and fear of nature, more
specifically the snake or subject in the natural realm. As Snake begins we are introduced to the
speaker encountering this element of the wild, the snake. Early in the poem, the language
utilizes the use of sound devices that not only immerse the reader in the scenario, but also the
speaker at the level of the snake. Lines 4 13 simulate a snake s hiss by employing words

Richard Wilbur s Death of a Toad he reflects on the thoughts that all people even a toad might have
thought when nearing the time of death. Through careful structure, diction, and graphic imagery, it
shows his regards towards the deathof the toad as well as his transformation from uncaring to
compassionate.
The division of the stanzas leads the emotional rollercoaster that the speaker undergoes. The
poem opens with the speaker s graphic observation, A toad the power mower caught. He seemed
unsympathetic towards the toad and it is evident in the description given in the next few lines
about the toad s injury. When the toad hid in the cineraria leaves, the speaker shows some interest.
