Ethical Internet Behavior in the Workplace By: Brittany Underwood Ereka Slaughter Ms. Moore 1 st Block
Objective The objective of this Power Point is to show viewers and future business people the proper way to conduct themselves on the on a day to day basis in the workplace. This Power Point will also show what not to do in detail and explain how this will help you in the future.
What exactly are ethics ? Ethics is the set of values based on the moral virtues of hard work and diligence. So basically in a nutshell that means the proper way to act. This being in the workplace, on the internet, at school, church, etc.
Administering Assistance If you see that a co-worker is having trouble with an internet assignment or needs help locating information on the internet, it would be nice to help them out. This is a sign of sincerity and is definitely considered ethical because it shows good team work skills and that you are caring when it comes to other people.
Viewing Websites You want to make sure that the websites that you view are both authorized and appropriate for your setting. When you go to work, you go there to do a job not to waste time doing something you have no business doing. It would be proper to filter you internet viewing material because it shows that you have self-control and are able to stay focused on your job.
Be respectful! No matter how you feel about certain co-workers or even your supervisor, make sure that you are always being courteous and respectful! Even if they might not return the favor. Two wrongs don’t make a right and if a someone is being disrespectful to you, report it to a higher authority. This is ethical because it shows proper mannerisms and shows that you know how to act professionally.
Dress Appropriately If you feel like dressing to a maximum exposure level, leave it at home. You come to work to be cordial and professional. Make sure that all your assets are covered and make sure that your clothes aren’t too tight. This would be ethical because you need to make sure that you aren’t a total distraction to a member of the opposite sex at your job, also your focus should be on your job not on how fashionable you look.
Optimism and Positivity! Keeping a positive attitude while at work not only does wonders for yourself, but that positive energy is transferred throughout your environment. Being optimistic is also beneficial. It is ethical to be positive because it can show others that you are satisfied and grateful for the place you work and the job you do!
Hacking One thing that is improper in both the workplace and at home is hacking into other people’s computers. This is an invasion of privacy and not only can it result in you loosing your job but it may also be a felony. This would definitely be unethical because you are wasting the time of your boss and putting a bad name on your company.
Gossiping Gossiping about co-workers is not appropriate and not acceptable. It’s also rude and may hurt that person’s feelings. Most of the time people gossip, they don't have their information correct because stories change every time they get passed along. This would be unethical because you are doing something other that what you’re getting paid to do and can create distractions in the office.
Shopping Online There is nothing wrong with shopping online in your own time, but there’s a time and place for everything. If your job doesn’t require you to shop online, then you shouldn’t be doing it. This is unethical because your boss is paying you to come to a facility and do a specific job, not to waste resources by doing something you should d in your personal time.
Posting Information The worst possible thing you could do on the internet is to post personal information online. This is a careless act that shows that you don’t care if your information is used against you, because that’s what will happen. Posting information such as your address, credit card #, full name, phone #, etc. could result in someone stealing your identity wholly. This is unethical because not only could this hurt you but if someone has stolen your identity, they can get access to your job, do work, and make decisions for job that shouldn’t be made.
Sucking up If you’ve been hired at job, it was because you had the skills and knowledge to do your work; therefore, there is no reason to suck up to your boss or supervisor. This is unethical because it most likely it will be irritating to them and won’t allow you to get a higher position or recognition. All it does is ensure that you’ll go out of your way for no reason at all.
Accepted User Policy (AUP) AUP is a set of rules applied to the internet & public websites that restrict the ways the network is used. AUP is usually noted; Terms of Service and are written for corporations, businesses, universities, schools, and internet providers. For more information, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acceptable_use_policy
Summary We learned a lot about doing this Power Point. We were able to receive a better understanding of what AUP is and how it relates to ethical behavior in the workplace and on the internet. We also learned some things to avoid in the workplace and on the internet that we thought were appropriate. All this information will be beneficial as we grow older and pursue careers in our future endeavors .
