Evaluation 4
My target audience are young females from the age 9-13.
They are young and girly which makes my magazine suitable for
this age group as lots of conventions are shown to fit into the
criteria this audience would want in a pop magazine. The home
theme for the magazine reflects this age, appealing to the
audience with the baby pinks, lilacs and the fashion articles and
music updates. The happy and cheerful cover stands out for the
readers and is well recognisable, continuing the layout and
house style for each issue. The main image represents a
stylised girl band, reinforcing the idea of ‘girl power’ that
appeals to the younger female target audience and giving them
the ‘perfect’ image to let them dream about being that
glamorous, beautiful and wealthy when they grow up.
A typical consumer of the magazine would be Katie. She is 12
years old, and an only child, making music a primary focus for
her to entertain herself and something she takes an interest in
every day. She dances in her free time, attending musical
theatre three times a week as she enjoys singing and dancing
and aspires to be as famous as her idol, Rihanna. She dances
around her pink-walled room singing into a hairbrush to female
artists and bands such as Little Mix, Pixie Lott and Beyonce; as
well as the boy band heart-throbs ‘One Direction’ that she
listens to on her small TV. MTC has become a more viewed
channel, with her tastes varying from movies, Reality TV and
other pop channels. Sophie has posters around her room of
Rihanna, Beyonce and Amelia Lilley who is an upcoming artist
from the hit TV talent show ‘X Factor’ that Sophie loves to watch
and aspires to one day be on.
Katie is beginning to find out her own style so likes reading
about fashion and what her idols are wearing. She is
given pocket money for doing chores around her house
so £1 is a great bargain for the features and fun articles
that are in ‘bubblegum’ magazine. As well as this, having
freebies such as the posters in this issue means you are
getting more for your money which is always a plus.
Katie’s mum is happy with Katie collecting ‘bubblegum’
magazine every fortnight and has recently allowed her to
subscribe, seeing the promotion of ‘5 months for £4!’ on
the contents page. As a parent, Sophie’s mum is happy
with the content of the magazine and that the language is
safe and family friendly, like the genre of ‘pop’ itself.
This photo is used in my magazine and is a good representation of my
reader. The fun photo conveys the young age of the audience as a
piggy back is something children do with their friends. This is also
a good representation as the closeness of the girls in the image
associates with best friends, that a lot of young girls have and the
smiling face conveys the good times you have with your friends.
They also represent the different ethnicities friend groups have and
doesn’t show the typical ‘young, white and beautiful’ stereotype
that is shown in magazines as an image of ‘perfection’.
They both appear natural with no over the top make-up or rebellious
look that associates with the safe pop genre, giving a good
example to the readers and something they would follow.
The clothes could also represent the reader, the fact they are wearing
up-to-date clothing such as printed leggings and buttoned-up
shirts conveys the readers like to be up to date with the latest
fashions and would want a magazine to include this.
