This document discusses the evaluation and selection of shoes and orthotics for runners. It describes the importance of controlling subtalar joint motion to allow optimal function of the midtarsal joint and lower extremity. There are three main types of running shoes - cushion shoes for supinators, stability shoes for mild-moderate overpronators, and motion control shoes for moderate-severe overpronators. Orthotics have a shell, rearfoot post to control rearfoot motion, and forefoot post to address lower extremity alignment issues. Matching a runner's foot type and gait abnormalities to the appropriate shoe or orthotic can improve performance and reduce injury risk.
