Evaluation Question 1 – In
what ways does your media
product use, develop or
challenge forms and
conventions of real media
products ?
A common convention used in magazine is the use of the
rules of thirds. My magazine also uses this with the position
of the masthead and main image; this is done to make
certain parts of the magazine stand out to attract the target
audience.
A common convention used in magazine is the use of the
rules of thirds. My magazine also uses this with the position
of the masthead and main image; this is done to make
certain parts of the magazine stand out to attract the target
audience.
Another convention of magazines are the use of a medium
long shot or medium close up for the main image. I have
done this as it allows the reader to clearly see who is on the
front of the magazine and how they can relate to this
person. This therefore draws the target audience in.
The main cover line is also bigger than the rest to make the
biggest or most interesting story stand out from the other
story's and articles within the magazine, as the main article
is most likely the story to interest the audience enough into
buying the magazine.
I have also kept a consistent house style like many other
magazines, as this makes the magazine look a lot more
professional and therefore attracts my target audience.
I have also placed the bar code out of the way in the
bottom left corner of the front cover. This is done so it does
not take up to much space and make the magazine look un
professional.

The masthead I have used also follows conventions of
magazines, as it is placed at the top of the page making it
the first thing the audience sees. It is also large text as well
as being bold therefore this grabs the attention of the
audience making it an effective device.
The cover lines used also attract the target audience by
talking about artists they will be interested in.
I have used large numbers on the images and next to the sub headings. This is a
convention commonly used within magazines as it easily allows the reader to see
where they can find each article allowing for the magazine to become more
practical and more professional.
I have used box format on my
contents page this is also a
frequent feature used in other
magazines. We see this as the
text is placed on or in rectangle
boxes as well as images. This
makes the magazine look
professional.
I have also used large bold sub
headings with small writing about
it underneath. This is an eye
catching and effective way of
attracting the target audience as
it makes the magazine stand out
and look professional.
The use of several images around
the page is also a feature of real
magazines as this fills the page
with interesting eye catching
material to draw the reader.
Another feature on the contents
page is the reoccurrence of the
house style. This makes the
magazine look professional and
gives a clear format.
I have also added at the bottom
of the page, information about
next weeks issue, this makes the
magazine more personal to the
reader as they feel they are
getting involved with the
magazine.
It is a strong convention of all magazines and news papers to put
their main body text into columns. I have followed these conventions
as it makes the magazine look more professional. It also makes the
large amount of text easier to read and has a greater appeal to the
audience.

Another convention of a magazine is having a large masthead/title
when the double page spread is about a particular artist or band. This
appeals to the target audience as it clearly highlights what the article
is about and makes the magazine look professional.

Another convention of a double page spread is a large image of the
artist, as this allows the reader to clearly see what the article is about
in an interactive way.

The double page spread also keeps a consistent house style with the rest of the
magazine, this makes the magazine look professional.

Both double page spread both in some why highlight if the artist or the
interviewer are speaking. My magazine uses different colours where as the
professional magazine uses a bolder font to show the difference in who is
speaking. This allows the magazine to appeal to the target audience as it is
easier to read and understand.
