TYPICAL LAYOUT:
• Bold masthead placed at the
top of the page.
• Model in centre of the page -
direct mode of address.
• Cover lines surround the
model in sections.
USE OF A PLUG:
• Promoting Stone Roses 2016
tours.
• Plugs commonly used on
magazines to try and entice
readers whilst synonymously
promoting products, (e.g. albums,
concert/festival tickets).
CLEAR COLOUR SCHEME:
• Changing the colour scheme to match the colours in the main image is a
technique commonly used on magazines. Maintaining an iconic house style.
• Junction’s colour scheme is quite muted (few vibrant colours). But
compliments the colours of the main image, particularly the model’s eyes.
C O N T E N T S PA G E
LAYOUT:
• Similar style to the one in the
Q Magazine I analysed:
• Mainly images
• Grid layout
The grid layout makes the contents
page more of a visual representation,
which is more aesthetically pleasing
and suitable for my target audience
(16-24 year olds).
COVER LINES:
Features all of the cover lines
from the front cover that
readers would expect, as
well as extra content.
SOCIAL MEDIA & SUBSCRIPTIONS:
• A section in the bottom right corner lists all
the different social media platforms and an
advertisement to subscribe to the magazine.
• The subscription feature is found in many
print and online magazines.
D O U B L E PA G E S P R E A D
An example of an image bleeding
across two pages, similar to my own
double page spread.
TYPICAL LAYOUT:
• Text in columns.
• Pull quote used to break up text.
• Large masthead, emphasised by
bold typography.
Quotes can be used to support the article
and provide readers with a more
personal, sometimes more informal,
approach to the issue of the article.
The quote from Kirk Hammett (from the
band Metallica) in the top right hand
corner demonstrates this.
BLEED:
• The main image of the double page spread bleeds
across two pages.
• As it is an image taken at a concert, it almost juxtaposes
the theme of the article, which is that the music industry
has become more digitalised.
The main image conveys the electric and exciting
atmosphere at a concert. The colours of the image are very
warm, provoking a reminiscent and nostalgic feeling.

F R O N T C O V E R
FONTS:
• The fonts I have chosen to use give
the appearance of being
handwritten or painted, whereas
most other magazines tend to use
bold, sans serif fonts.
• Using less straight-edged fonts
portrays my magazine to be
intended for a younger audience as
it gives a more informal
appearance. Using straight-edged
fonts makes the cover more formal
which would deter my target
audience.
FOR EXAMPLE:
JUNCTION : more well-rounded, clean-cut image
JUNCTION : more raw, perhaps juvenile appearance (i.e. more genre-specific)
C O N T E N T S PA G E
LAYOUT:
• One way in which my product develops from other magazines would be the layout style of the
contents page.
• The contents is laid out in a grid format.
• Whilst it is similar to the contents page in Q Magazine, a lot of magazines still refer to the typical
contents layout (list format).
• Using a grid format makes the page more visual and easier to navigate for my intended
audience.
• A list style would be more appropriate for an older demographic - younger readers want to be
able to locate stories they want to read in a short amount of time and a grid layout helps.

CONTENT:
• From the coverlines on the front cover, the
stories within the magazine seem to deviate
from the norms of music magazines. A lot of
music magazines tend to focus solely on the
artists and use artist names on the front
cover to attract more readers.
• Junction, on the other hand, provides insight
for readers into the industry itself and this is
evident from the cover lines, such as “THE
BATTLE AGAINST DIGITISATION” which
focuses on the growing digitalisation of the
music industry.
F R O N T C O V E R
MODEL:
• The model is wearing little to no makeup and her
hair is tied back. With most magazines, the model is
often styled and made up to appear glamorous,
elegant or sexy.
• I challenged this by having my model wear
practically no make up and simple, comfortable
clothing.
• This was important because it promotes a positive
message to readers that they should appreciate
their natural selves more.
• Whilst the model’s image may not correlate to
society’s perception of beauty that the current
media industry endorses, it boldly states that
people should embrace what they were born with.
vs
C O N T E N T S PA G E
ARTICLES:
• The articles featured on my contents page would not
normally be seen in other music magazines. Because
Junction is targeted towards teenagers and young
adults, some of these articles are extremely relevant.
• For example, “Staying safe at concerts” is an issue
many teenagers are facing nowadays, particularly
young girls who are being sexually harassed in the
crowd. An article on this can be found here: https://
broadly.vice.com/en_us/article/the-teen-girls-calling-
out-sexual-assault-at-music-concerts.
• Music magazines should not just focus on artists but
also provide useful information for music
consumers who may face these kinds of issues.
• There is also a segment where the readers can send
in their reviews of new albums, artists, concerts etc.
It provides young people with a platform to openly
express their views on music they enjoy.
D O U B L E PA G E S P R E A D
TOPIC:
• The content of the article itself is not one that
would be featured in most music magazines.
It is not particularly genre-specific as it does
not focus on the alternative/indie genre nor
does it focus on a single artist.
• This article was written with an educative and
informative purpose - Junction’s aim here is
to educate readers about both the pros and
cons of digitisation and the exploitation of
artists by companies who are only looking to
gain profit. In this way, the readers will be
able to inform their own opinions on the
matter.
FOR EXAMPLE:
• In the double page spread above, the article talks
about how Ed Sheeran is breaking boundaries within
the industry which state that musicians must look and
act a certain way in order to become successful. By
having the article written from Ed Sheeran’s
perspective makes it feel a lot more personal.
• However, a way to challenge this would be have the
article on the issue of beauty standards within the
music industry and use Ed Sheeran’s story as an
example.
• This way, people will be more informed on the
industry as a whole, rather than a single artist’s
background.
