How does your media product represent particular social groups?
We chose to represent the highest of the social group. This is seen in our main character, a very wealthy man, living on his own in a very nice house. He doesn't have a ‘job’ to the ordinary citizen but his string of secret killings and assassinations provide him with more than enough money. He decides to keep himself to himself and doesn't really associate with others around him.We decided on a series of things to include within our thriller in order to communicate this to the audience. Firstly, within the storyline, we chose to have Brad only be associated with very top and well respected people (Andrew Carter). These people are also among those few elite people within society. Secondly, our opening sequence focuses only on Brad himself, this is to show how alone and secluded he is from society. This could be as a result of personal preference, job inclusion or even the lack of available time. Finally, as we know he is an unmarried man, we chose to have his living quarters as a big, dethatched house. This was to represent his wealth and his certain society group.
Our main character throughout the film as you know was a male figure, Brad. We decided to introduce a woman within our film also. We established a relationship between this male and female characters and highlighted the effect a woman would have on this mans job.We chose to represent the man as the more dominant character, the character who makes the decision and evidently has to choose in the end. His profession impacts on his relationship and as a result the story is based around this.
With regards to the female, we chose to make her seemingly innocent and only guilty in the sense of love (protecting their relationship through her name change). As the story progresses and we show there relationship growing stronger, the true effect comes later. Where his relationship interferes with his profession. We chose to include this twist to provide a variation within the story and also to show the effects love has on a persons choices. This is also seen in Seven where Brad Pitts unhappy wife has an effect on his job choices
Without a hint of sexism, we tried to make our main character (a man) a person who is in charge of the relationship and who makes the decisions. He has the say over the woman and their relationship al depends on this. We thought although this appears to be the face of things the female does have a few secrets, these being that her dad is infact Andrew Carter and she has lied about her last name.We chose to main the man more dominant in a sense that in society it has always been that stereotypically the man is more dominant. We chose to make the woman appear to be inferior to the man but deep down she has some secret and in some ways has the upper hand. Another reason for this is that we thought it would provide a very important twist within the story and provide a basis for us to work with.
We chose to have our main character (Brad) as a young, good looking man. We thought this would be suitable not only to highlight inexperience but to show that it is not only the poor and needy that commit crimes. We felt that his presence would have an impact on the audience with height being an issue and he camerawork tying in with this.We chose to have the woman as a typical ‘daddys little girl’, spoiled and well looked after. This was important to us in order to show our audience that it isn’t all glitz and glamour for the women unintentially being involved with the wrong people. Our choice for the leading gang member (Andrew Carter) was very easy. We wanted to introduce a stereo type into our film, a middle aged, wealthy gang lord was at the front of our minds.
There is no actual death in our opening sequence, although it is strongly implied throughout. Our sequence is based on the death of a top gangster. We wanted to make this death as high profile as possible. For this we decided to complicate the aftermath. For this we thought it would be good to imply that our main character is being chased, thus relating to Andrew Carter being a top gangster. We also include a pyramid of killings with Carter being at the top. This is to highlight his significance within the film and to show he was very important. The fact that Brad is initially showing that he is on edge and nervous shows that he understands the reality of his actions and the high profile murder he has committed.
