E-mail
• “Electronic mail” a system for
  receiving, sending, and storing electronic
  messages.
• It has gained nearly universal popularity around
  the world with the spread of the Internet.
• E-mail has become the preferred method for both
  personal and business communication.
Evolution of E-mail
• 1965 e-mail was introduced at MIT.
• 1971 Ray Tomlinson sent the first network
  e-mail on ARPANET.
• 1977 A standard format (RFC 733) was
  proposed to enable sending e-mail across the
  internet.
• In the same year, U.S postal service began to
  see email as potential threat to mail volumes.

• 1982 Simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP)
  was introduced which was the first known
  use of e-mail.
• 1988 the first commercial e-mail
  product, Microsoft mail was released for
  the Mac.
• 1989 IBM released Lotus Notes 1.0.
• 1989 CompuServe offered easy internet
  and mail service.

• 1990 e-mail spam began.
• 1992 Microsoft outlook for MS.DOS was released.
• 1993 BellSouth and IBM unveil Simon Personal
  communicator , the world’s first mobile phone with PDA
  features including e-mail capability.
• 1996 Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith launched “Hot Mail”
  one of the first free web based e-mail services.
• 1997 Microsoft Outlook 97 was released, offering a central
  hub that includes e-mail, scheduling, contact
  management, task management and a journal module.
• In the same year , Yahoo! introduced Yahoo! Mail.

• 1998 Microsoft outlook includes the ability to customize and
  incorporate personal, corporate and web-based information
  in one place.
• Late 1990s , HTML was introduced, allowing for rich
  formatting within messages
• 2000 Microsoft introduced Entourage mail for Mac.
• 2003 Microsoft outlook introduced Junk mail and anti-
  phishing filters.
• 2004 E-mail spam laws codified by Federal Trade
  Commission.
• 2006 FACEBOOK opened to public, and outlook 2007 was
  released.

• 2010 Microsoft outlook 2010 and Window phone 7
  introduced.
• 2010 Facebook announced plans to incorporate
  Microsoft Office web Apps into its messaging
  system.
• 2011 Associated press stylebook changes “e-
  mail” to “email”.
