E-mail was first introduced at MIT in 1965 and became more widely used with the spread of the internet. Ray Tomlinson sent the first email over ARPANET in 1971 and a standard format was proposed in 1977 to allow email to be sent across different networks. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, email became more popular and accessible with the commercialization of email programs and services and the rise of the internet. Standards and features continued to develop, addressing issues like spam and making email more full-featured and integrated into other applications and devices.

Evolution of E-mail • 1990 e-mail spam began. • 1992 Microsoft outlook for MS.DOS was released. • 1993 BellSouth and IBM unveil Simon Personal communicator , the world’s first mobile phone with PDA features including e-mail capability. • 1996 Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith launched “Hot Mail” one of the first free web based e-mail services. • 1997 Microsoft Outlook 97 was released, offering a central hub that includes e-mail, scheduling, contact management, task management and a journal module. • In the same year , Yahoo! introduced Yahoo! Mail.

Evolution of E-mail • 1998 Microsoft outlook includes the ability to customize and incorporate personal, corporate and web-based information in one place. • Late 1990s , HTML was introduced, allowing for rich formatting within messages • 2000 Microsoft introduced Entourage mail for Mac. • 2003 Microsoft outlook introduced Junk mail and anti- phishing filters. • 2004 E-mail spam laws codified by Federal Trade Commission. • 2006 FACEBOOK opened to public, and outlook 2007 was released.
