Our vision
“The purpose of EWB-MI shall reflect and support the values and
mission of Engineers Without Borders - International: To partner
with disadvantaged communities worldwide to improve the quality
of life through education and implementation of sustainable
engineering projects, while promoting new dimensions of

Current Projects - Biogas plant in Indonesia
Tuesday, September 15, 2015
• Project carried out with BORDA – German NGO involved in waste management
solutions in poor communities on the suburbs of Jakarta, Indonesia
• Problem statement: organic fraction of municipal solid waste is now composted; some
communities face challenges with selling the compost due to subsidies from the
government for the chemical compost
• Moreover, increasing amounts of waste are being disposed, rising an environmental
issue
• Concept of the project: to find an alternative way of treatment to obtain higher value
products – with the focus on renewable energy
8
Biogas plant in Indonesia
Tuesday, September 15, 2015
Activities carried out since February 2014:
• Several solutions have been suggested, of which
biogas and bioethanol ended up being considered
• Technological and economical evaluation was
performed for the two processes
• Biogas plant solution was accepted by our partners in
Indonesia
• Detailed estimation of biogas yield
• Design of the plant, choice of equipment, supporting
facilities and adjustments evaluation
• Report is soon to be finished for 200 households
scenario (unit for further development)
9
Biogas plant in Indonesia
Tuesday, September 15, 2015
Activities to be carried out until January 2015:
• Sponsorship is to be determined
• We need to finish the economical feasibility study
• Trip to Indonesia is planned for December/January for
the implementation of the project
• Two control trips in 2015
• If project is successful, further expansion is desired
Who do we need?
• Enthusiastic and motivated students, preferably with
chemical/mechanical engineering background
• Future leaders to take over the project

Abaarso Project

BACKGROUND ABOUT SOMALILAND
• Somali Civil War started in 1988
• Somaliland declared independence from the rest of
Somalia in 1991
• Most countries in the world unrecognized Somaliland
as a independent country
• It has been ranked the world’s #1 failed state for 5
consecutive years
12
• Abaarso School is located in a region of
the world that has been known for
chronic instability and the presence of
terrorist groups.
• “The U.S. Department of State continues to warn U.S. citizens
to avoid all travel to Somalia. This replaces the Travel Warning
dated June 21, 2013, to update information on security
concerns. There is at this time no U.S. Embassy or other formal
U.S. diplomatic presence in Somalia. Consequently, the U.S.
government is not in a position to assist or effectively provide
services to U.S. citizens in Somalia. In light of this and
continuous security threats, the U.S. government recommends
that U.S. citizens avoid all travel to Somalia…”

ABOUT ABAARSO SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
• The school was founded in 2008
• Abaarso Tech is a non-profit organization and the
boarding school is a charitable enterprise
• All teachers are volunteers
• Each students has to take 34 hours course work 6
days a week (Double than private schools in US)
• Teachers typically feel very safe at Abaarso Tech
http://www.abaarsoschool.org/
14
ABAARSO WITH SUSTAINABILITY
• Abaarso School received
$50,000 from Zayed
Future Energy Prize to
implement sustainability
in school
• Budget is divided into
following category
CATEGORY Budgeted (USD)
Wind Turbine Renovation $ 5,000
Wind Turbine Batteries $ 10,000
Distribution System $ 10,000
Solar Water Heaters $ 5,000
Grey Water System (not included
in EWB) $ 20,000
TOTAL $ 50,000
15
WHAT WE HAVE DONE
– Install four Solar water
heaters
– Install LEDs lights
– Data logging (Analyze
power consumption)
– Mapping distribution
system (For planning
new distribution
system)
– Put down wind turbine
(For fixing)
16
FINISHED SUMMER 2015
• Planning to improve distribution system – make distribution system more stable and reliable
• Design structure for solar water heater and put them on (Boy’s and Girl’s Dorm)
• Put back wind turbine and connect it to the grid (sizing of the batteries)
• Fixing old generator
• Abaarso School applied Zayed Future Energy Prize again this year. So far they are finalist (more work is coming)
• Most important thing – We need committed students (1-2 students) to be the leader of this project in the future.
We are about to graduated in 6 months
• TIME COMMITMENT!!!
