EWRT 1A Assignment Sheet Essay #1: The Argument Essay: An In-‐Class Writing Exam: 75 points Prompt Introduction Write an essay of at least 500 words arguing for the supplies you have chosen to take with you into the wild. Present the issue to readers, and develop an argument for the purpose of confirming, challenging, or changing your readers’ views on which supplies are the most important for survival. You don’t need outside resources for this paper. Essay #2: The Narrative Essay: (three to five pages) 150 points Please see the syllabus for due dates. Prompt Introduction Using The Hunger Games as your starting point, write an essay about an event in your life that will engage readers and that will, at the same time, help them understand the significance of the event. Tell your story dramatically and vividly in 3-‐5 pages. The Works Cited page for this project will include at least The Hunger Games. Essay #3 The Concept Essay (three to five pages) 150 points Please see the syllabus for due dates. Prompt Introduction Write an essay about a concept from The Hunger Games that interests you and that you want to study further. When you have a good understanding of the concept you have chosen, explain it to your readers, considering carefully what they might already know about it and how your essay might add to what they know. The Works Cited page for this research project must contain at least three entries. Note: You are free to choose the concept about which you want to write, but choose carefully, as you are required to explain the concept in an interesting and compelling way. Essay #4 Proposing a Solution: Essay (four to six pages) 200 points Due date: Before the final class begins. Prompt Introduction Write an essay from four to six pages in length, that proposes a solution to a well-‐defined problem faced by a community or group to which you may belong. Alternatively, you may address a well-‐defined problem faced by one of the districts or communities in The Hunger Games. Address your proposal to your audience: one or more members of the group, its leadership, or to outsiders who may be able to contribute to solving the problem. Use a minimum of three credible sources to support your argument.

Your homework is designed both to help you think about your reading and to help you produce ideas for your essays. In order to earn an A on your homework, you must do the following: ü Complete all of the posts. ü Post them on time. ü Be thoughtful in your responses. Your final grade will be figured this way: 150/26 =5.77 points per post minus 2.88 points for each late post (48 hours after the due time. There are no points awarded for posts more than 48 hours late). Then, multiply the total times the average grade percentage for the quality of your work. Example • Posts completed: 25 x 5.77 points = 144.25 points • Late posts: 4 x 2.88 =11.52 • Subtract the smaller from the larger: 151.8 -‐ 12= 132.73 • Quality of posts: A or 95% • Multiply the total times the quality: 132.73 x.95=126.09 or 126/150 points. Participation, Quizzes, Activities, Writing Workshops 125 points Participation includes doing all work asked of you inside and outside of class, maintaining a positive learning environment for your classmates, and contributing to class discussion. Participation points are accrued based on your in-‐class participation. To earn points, do the reading, come to class, be prepared for the discussion or activity, and engage in both small and large group discussions.
