CHAPTER 7 : TYPE OF STORAGE
QUESTIONS
1. How Are Storage Devices Different from Storage Media?
Storage devices are the computer hardware that records and/or retrieves items to
and from storage media.
2. What Are the Characteristics of an Internal Hard Disk?
 Capacity
 Platters
 Read/Write heads
 Cylinders
 Sectors and tracks
 Revolutions per minute
 Transfer rate
 Access time
3. What Is the Purpose of Network Attached Storage Devices, External and Removable
Hard Disks, and Hard Disk Controllers?
 Network Attached Storage Devices is a server connected to a network with
the sole purpose of providing storage
 External Hard Disk is a separate free-standing hard disk that connects to
your computer with a cable or wirelessly.
 Removable hard disk is a hard disk that you insert and remove from a drive.
 Hard Disk Controllers control the transfer of data, instructions and
information from a disk to and from the system bus and other components of
the computer.
4. What Are the Various Types of Flash Memory Storage?
 Complact Flash(CF)
 Secure Digital (SD)
 Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC)
 MicroSD
 MicroSDHC
 xD Picture Card
 Memory Stick
 Memory Stick Micro (M2)
5. What Is Cloud Storage, and What Are Its Advantages?
Cloud Storage is an internet service that provides storage to computer users.
Advantages of cloud storage are:
 Access files from any computer
 Store large files instantaneously
 Allow others to access their files
 View time-critical data and image immediately
 Store offsite backups
 Provide data center functions
6. What Are the Characteristics of Optical Discs?
An optical disc consists of a flat, round, portable disc made of metal plastic and
lacquer that is written and read by a laser.
7. How Are the Various Types of Optical Discs Different?
 A CD-ROM can be read from but not written to.
 A CD-R is a multisession optical disc on which users can write but not erase.
 A CD-RW is an erasable multisession disc.
 A DVD-ROM is a high-capacity optical disc on which user can read but not
write or erase.
 A Blu-ray Disc-ROM (BD-ROM) has a storage capacity of 100 GB.
 A DVD-RW, DVD+RW and DVD+RAM are high capacity rewritable DVD
formats.
8. How Are Tape, Magnetic Stripe Cards, Smart Cards, Microfilm and Microfiche, and
Enterprise Storage Used?
 Tape is a magnetically coated ribbon of plastic capable of storing large
amounts of data and information. A tape drive reads and write data and
information on a tape.
 Magnetic Stripe Cards contains a magnetic stripe that stores information.
 Smart Card stores data on a thin microprocessor embedded in the card
 Microfilm and Microfiche store microscopic images of documents on a roll or
a sheet film.
 Enterprise Storage stores huge volumes of data and information for large
businesses.

SHORT ANSWER
1) -A network attached storage device is a server connected to a network with the sole
purpose of providing storage.
-up to 6TB or more
2) –thinner, longer cables, reduced interference, less expensive, support for many
more connected devices at once and faster speeds.
-optical disc drives, printers, scanners, digital cameras and other devices.
3) – single-session is manufacturers write all items on the disc at one time.
Multisession means users can write on part of the disc at one time and another part
at a later time.
-ARCHIVE DISC STORES stores photos from an online photo center in the jpg file
format. Picture CD stores digital versions of film using a jpg file format at a lower
resolution.
4) – memory cards enable mobile users easily to transport digital photos, music or files
to and from mobile devices and computers or other devices.
-compaact flash (512 MB to 100 GB), Secure Digital (512 MB to 8 GB), SDHC (4 to 32
GB), microSDHC (4 to 16 GB), microSD (1 to 2 GB).
5) -Microfilm is a 100- to 215-foot roll of film. Microfiche is a small sheet of film.
-microfilm and microfiche to store back issues of newspaper, magazines, and
genealogy records and to archive inactive files.
