  • 40. Brian CampSVP, Infrastructure ServicesKnowledgeBase Marketing“After carefully testing several data warehouse platforms, we chose the Oracle Database Machine. Oracle Exadata was able to speed up one of our critical processes from days to minutes. The Oracle Database Machine will allow us to improve service levels and expand our service offerings.”
  • 41. EricssonTelecomm: Better, more timely business information at lower costCUSTOMER PERSPECTIVEWith Exadata, Ericsson will automate data collection to a centralized server.  End Users can then initiate a rules engine which correlates data from multiple sources, analyze performance and call quality and triggers actions (problem tickets and dispatch) for RF Engineers.CUSTOMER OVERVIEWEricsson has responsibility for cell towers and accompanying components (antennas and switches) used by various carriers (Sprint, AT&T, etc).  They are required to meet/monitor SLAs and be able to quickly identify trouble spots and respond efficiently in the event of lapses in performance.  In order to accomplish this, data (tower_id, switch_id, zipcode, lat/long, time, call status, etc) is collected  from each cell tower switch,  processed  and stored in a database for analysis.  CHALLENGES/OPPORTUNITIESCurrent collection process is manual: RF Engineers drive to each cell tower collecting info for his market onto a  laptop then performing analysis locally.

  • 44. Additional Software: RAC, Tuning/Diagnostics Packs, Partitioning, Advanced CompressionRESULTSExadata provides the following business value:Tremendous cost savings, eliminate RF Engineer manual data collection
  • 47. Reduce turnaround time from time data is collected until the time it is ready for reporting: 30 days down to hours

  • 50. Growth through acquisition (Merrill Lynch, Countrywide)Previous Platform v Exadata EnvironmentB of A chose Exadata over Netezza and Teradata because they felt it was the best fit for their DW given their very large Oracle database footprint. Also Oracle Enterprise Manager as the management standard highlighted Oracle’s strength and Teradata and Netezza’s weakness in this area.Looking at Exadata as a consolidation platform for a large number of their Oracle databases was very significantGOALSIncrease application performance to meet LOB SLA’s.

Editor's Notes

  • #6: Besides the performance gains of Exadata, every customer is looking into some type of consolidation. Lower Cost through consolation. Since the Oracle Database Machine offers extreme performance for both OLTP and OLAP workloads, customers can consolidate various pillar based or functional systems into a single machine GMB: Using Oracle’s database security options (Advanced Security, Database Vault, Audit Vault, etc.), customers consolidating workloads on Exadata can rest assured that they need not sacrifice performance and scale for security. Certified for the Exadata platform, Oracle’s comprehensive database security portfolio helps customers better satisfy their compliance mandates and protect their information from a wide array of threats, internal and external.
  • #7: The benefits that this approach provide are lower cost, higher quality of service and higher manageability than current silo approach. Some organizations are adopting a piecemeal approach to this challenge by simply virtualizing the servers. While this brings cost savings because it increases the utilization of servers and reduces the need to purchase new machines, it does not contribute to ensuring a high QoS for all apps, and it creates a more complex environment to manage as the number of entities sprawls.
  • #20: Ericsson saw Exadata as an opportunity to drive out costs while examining data on a broader basis. Previously Ericsson was only reporting cell data on a monthly basis. Now they are collecting daily cell data which as completely changed their view of the business. A half rack will drive the implementation of the cell tower database on Exadata.
