Example’s logo appears on the front
cover of this album, again acting as
artist branding as the design is well
known to his fans as it can be seen on
all his other albums. This, therefore,
acts as a familiar sign belonging to
Example. The audience would know it
well if they’re fans of him and new
listeners would see him as a well
established artist due to the
continuity of the logo being on all his
albums.
DIGIPACK ANALYSIS - EXAMPLE
The title is still obvious, despite it’s
size, due to it’s placement, being
directly under his name in the left
third. This is a conventional
placement for titles due to
reader’s reading text from left to
right.
It is in a black colour, which makes
it stand out, along with it being in
bold as it matches the black
costume the child wears in the
photograph and the black
background around the logo. Also,
bold text connotes to importance
so the audience would feel like
they’re missing out on something
if they didn’t read what it said.
The album title is in lowercase,
connoting to evolution, as it implies
he started of small, to evolve into the
big artist he is today, visually shown
by the difference in text of the album
title and his name, ‘example’ being in
a larger text size. It also has
connotations to the genre of EDM
due to the informality of sans serif,
meaning it’s more appropriate for
teenagers and young adults.
DIGIPACK ANALYSIS - EXAMPLE
The use of lighting plays a part as the
cloudy weather puts a vintage vibe on
the album, connoting to old age. This
relates to the album’s meaning as it
shows he’s evolved from a person to
an artist, yet still under the same sky.
This sends out the message that
people can become who they aspire to
be and that it is possible.
In proxemics, the crowd are close
together, showing how he has a large
fan base as it’s almost like a squeeze to
fit everyone into the image.
The warm lighting can also connote to
happiness due to the yellow
undertones. This enables the audience
to feel warmth towards the artist as his
happiness is visually portrayed so they
know they can also uplift their mood
with his music.
There is use of two different
images on this front cover. The
background image is a long shot of
a concert setting, taken from
Example’s point of view. The long
shot shows the crowd with their
arms up, connoting to happiness
as it shows they are liking the
music being played. This relates to
Dyer’s Paradox of the Star as it
shows him to be relatable, as
we’ve all been young, yet also
something special as he can
impact many people’s lives with
his music.
There is an image, in the form of a
photograph. It is of a boy, which can
be interpreted as Example himself.
The implied meaning behind this is
that as a child, he always had a
dream to perform, shown by the
mise en scene of body language as
his arms are up as if performing to a
crowd. Then the actual crowd are
seen in the background image,
showing his progression and success.
The placement of this photograph is
in the central third, making it the
main subject to focus on,
emphasising the album’s message.
DIGIPACK ANALYSIS - EXAMPLE
The mise en scene of costume is
also aesthetically pleasing for the
audience due to the text being
black. Therefore, it makes the
colour choice work well as the
black text doesn’t appear too
strong against the faded images.
The clothing is casual here,
conventional of the EDM genre
as the dance element means
people want to be comfortable in
what they’re wearing in order to
enjoy the music and move to the
beats with ease.
The floor of the photograph is
bright in comparison to the
colour behind, of the crowd. This
makes the image stand out
further as the light draws in the
audience.
There is no mode of address,
unconventional of the EDM genre.
The choice could be due to the artist
wanting the audience to take on his
own perspective so that he can
inspire them to work hard for what
they want.
The track list has been kept
relatively small and to the left third.
This is an interesting design as it is
different from a lot of other backs as
the track names tend to take up
more room. A reason for this could
be because he wanted it to look
basic, due to the album’s meaning.
Therefore, it would look as though
he created the album from a child’s
point of view, based on the text and
simplicity.
Despite the size, the text is still
noticeable and legible due to it
being bold, making it stand out.
Additionally, the use of white on
black helps this so it can be read
easily.
DIGIPACK ANALYSIS - EXAMPLE
There is also a gap between
the track number and the track
name, helpful for clarity. The
audience’s ability to distinguish
easily between the number
and name is important and it
can be done in many ways, for
example part being bold, or
another colour. Therefore, the
character spacing helps the
audience see this
differentiation without a
problem.
As it is in lowercase, it matches
the front cover as the title of
the album is also written in
lowercase. This is conventional
as it means the back and front
cover can relate to each other.Another convention and necessity for a back cover is
the barcode, website and credits, which are
commonly all grouped together as shown here.
The main colour for the back
cover is black, continuing the
theme of the black inputs on the
front cover, such as the text and
costume. Its kept very simplistic,
mirroring the font and keeping
the focus on the running theme.
Black is also a common colour to
be used for the EDM genre due
to it’s connotations of dark. This
is due to many concerts taking
place at night, where the lights
bring colour and vibrancy to the
environment. Therefore, the
audience see the black
background and expect
something good to come from
the music, like they would in a
concert.
An image can be seen in the upper
right third, which further links to
the album’s theme of childhood
and growing up; it looks like an old
photograph, representative of
Example as a child. Again, the photo
looks old as it has a rustic looking
filter, where the colours are
unsaturated. The prop within the
photo is an old car, giving the
audience vibes of polaroid cameras,
which were in more common usage
in the 80’s.
DIGIPACK ANALYSIS - EXAMPLE
The label logo is also seen in the
lower, right third. This enables the
audience to find similar artists to
Example as Ministry of Sound
would be expected to have other
EDM artists signed to their label.
Also the well known label, may influence people to buy the
album as it’s a popular name and so increases trust and belief
of the album being well produced and worth the money.
This follows the rest of his CD styles,
with the ‘e’ shape representing his
name, Elliot, as well as his stage name,
‘example’. The artist has found a logo
branding to help people identify his
easily.
Around the CD there are production
credits, naming the Ministry of Sound
company again as the case isn’t always
kept once bought. It also continues
reading about copyright warnings.
The album name is in lowercase
letters, using the same font as is
shown on the front cover, promoting
fluidity in the digipack's design.
The colours are just black and
white which is a simple design,
connoting to maturity. This
relates to the album’s message
of growing up as the CD acts as
a visual representation of the
artist having grown up since he
was younger and his direction is
now clear to him – it’s black and
white, meaning he knows that
he definitely loves being an
artist.
Also, the use of the
monochrome relates to the
front cover’s logo as it also
follows the black and white
colour scheme with the
background being dark and the
artist name being white.
DIGIPACK ANALYSIS - EXAMPLE
DIGIPACK ANALYSIS - EXAMPLE
Here is the poster advertisement for Example’s,
‘the evolution of man’ album. It is split in two,
with the left side showing an image of the album
front cover. This is so the audience can know
what it looks like and be familiar with it’s
appearance when they go to buy it in store.
The split is conventional as often, on album
advertisements, there is the same amount of
words to images.
On the right of the poster, it has the album name
in the same font as on the front cover. The
colour used matches the faded colour of the
crowd so it stands out more than the rest of the
white text.
Under the bold title, there is basic information
about the album, including the date it’s out in
sops and the online sites it can be purchased at.
Unconventionally, and perhaps a weakness to
this advertisement, is the lack of the artist’s
name as it is only seen in the image, instead of
separately as text.
