HEIDELBERG ROHRBACH 
URBAN DESIGN COMPETITION ENTRY 
Following the withdrawal of American forces, Heidelberg City Council is faced with the task to 
develop new urban design concepts for the former military compound to develop new urban 
concepts which can be sympathetically integrated into the existing structure of the Borough of 
Rohrbach. 
The design concept is a plot strategy that enables the site to be occupid and grow organically on a 
landscape and infrastructure grid. The design team is very international and truely interdisciplinary, 
consisting with designers, architects and engineers from Germany, China, England and Scotland.

KIBERA SLUM UPGRADING 
PROSTGRADUATE THESIS PROJECT 
In this 3-month thesis project, I aim to warn against a new genre of urban planning in Africa usually 
create by international architectal and engineering companies which inappropriately promise African 
cities such as Shanghai and ShenZhen, while at the same time investigating a new support system for 
slum upgrading in Africa formed by the government and people in Africa, the international organisa-tions 
and the Chinese investors/developers. 
Using interview, survey and research, I set out to test Co-production as a model of practice and 
production to enable collective actions that would eventually maximaise the benefi ts of IS upgrading 
as well as an infrastructure-based system that guides the slum upgrading projects and makes use of 
the local ingenuity to its greatest potential.

CASTLEGATE REGENERATION 
URBAN DESIGN TOOL PROJECT 
The Castlegate Quarter is one of the oldest areas of Sheffi eld, the site of the old Norman fortress 
and the main market area of the original settlement. The quarter is seen as an important gateway to 
the city centre, and is currently the site of Castle Market. The city’s largest market is on the verge of 
demolition and the city council is calling for ideas to redevelop the area. 
The development proposal has attempted to improve public realm throughout the area to improve 
access for all. The new development considers issues of accessibility from the outset, to ensure that 
appropriate measures are taken to achieve an environment that is accessible and appealing to all re-gardless 
of physical age, gender or circumstance. The uncovering of the culverted River Sheaf also 
adds to the proposed high quality public realm in the areas adjoining the Castle site.

NG’AMBO REGENERATION 
SUPPORT SYSTEM STUDIO PROJECT 
With an increasing demand for more housing, Zanzibar Town has gradually sprawled into the sur-rounding 
natural and agricultural areas, leaving a trail of unplanned and unstructured living areas. 
Ng’ambo is the very fi rst settlement outside of stone town. Under intense pressure from develop-ment. 
Planning guidelines and an integrated urban vision for the area are weak, leading to question-able 
developments rapidly taking place. 
After a 2-week fi eld trip and 3-month research, I believe for real effi cacy, the benefi ts of upgrad-ing 
must be expanded to reach a critical mass of urban residents and neighborhoods. My project 
found a real alternative to capitalist/academic/charity driven forms of development, highlighting 
co-production as a model of practice and production to enable collective actions and form strong 
support systems for the sustainability of large-scale upgrading projects.

THE BALTIC TRANGLE 
OPTIONAL MODULE PROJECT 
The Baltic Triangle is an important historical hub, located in the inner city of Liverpool. It acts as a 
home to artists and designers. However, in recent decades, the area has become increasingly derelict. 
This can attribute to a combination of factors, including its vacant mills, contrasting land uses, poor 
street conditions and a lack of overall coherence. The relative decline of the Baltic triangle is in stark 
contrast to its adjacent areas - the Kings Dock, Albert Dock and Liverpool one, which have received 
substantial investment. 
After a full month group work on the SWOT analysis of the site, the team identifi ed the key issues 
in the area, a new strategy was then put forward targeting at promoting the use of public realm and 
functioning as the hub for residential, leisure and creative uses.

CREATIVE APPROACH TO DESIGN 
I have always had a passion for comics and manga since I was little. I was a member in the manga 
club in both junior school and high school. And I was also in the publicity team of my high school 
Student Union which was in charge of designing posters for all the events in school. These hobbies 
and experience turned out to be very useful in my design career and had encouraged me to always try 
to use various creative ways to approach my design for different projects.
