An exceptionality in education refers to being intellectually gifted or requiring special schooling due to physical or mental handicaps. Speech disorders are difficulties producing sounds or fluency and include apraxia of speech, dysarthia, speech sound disorders, and voice disorders. Roughly 8-9% of young children have a speech disorder, which are typically identified through screenings and testing then referred to a speech pathologist. Children with speech disorders may struggle in school where communication is important, but they have the option to attend speech therapy or cope without treatment.
