Existence
• This is slide showing how the existence
manifests itself in different form
• The slide is prepared by
Dr. Pratap Singh Malik
The levels of Existence of an individual
There are as many levels of existence as many are the individuals
there. Each one lives at a specific level of existence ranging from the
level of “Food and Sex” to that of the “Self Actualization”. But as the
human race always tries, for the sake of convenience to generalize
the observations, all the humanity can be taken to be existing
primarily on these four levels -
1. Legal / Moral Level
2. Psychological Level
3. Philosophical Level
4. Spiritual Level
These are only the broad categories of existence and prototypes
also. The real life consists of sometimes an overlapping and other
times a co-existence of more than one levels. It is a case to case
study method.
Legal/Moral Level
• One is regulated by ‘Outside Dictates’
• linguistic expressions are – interests, rights,
duties, bound, omission, prescribed, direction.
• Methodology is adversarial and intrusive
• Objective is the achievement
• Skills are imparted through lectures & training
i.e. deduction “since A therefore B”
• Change is sought in the conduct, repetitive
action
• Subject Matter – legal/moral relation e.g.
husband-wife, landlord-tenant, police-accused,
complainant-respondent etc.
Psychological Level
• One is actuated by ‘Internal Drives’
• Linguistic expressions are – counseling, advice,
motivation, suggestion, cognition, learning etc.
• Methodology is ‘Harmony Seeking’
• Objective is the ‘Adjustment’ (with oneself and the surroundings)
• Skills are imparted through – Inspirational
Techniques, Reward-Punishment pair
• Change is sought in the behavior
• Subject matter is an individual and its
adjustment within and outside e.g. peers, group,
strain, anxiety, tension etc.
Philosophical Level
• One is guided by the ‘Universal Concerns’
• Linguistic Expressions are – theory,
hypothesis, Heaven, salvation, Moksha, Puŋya
etc.
• Methodology is mainly ‘Preaching’
• Objective is – ‘Universal Improvement’
• Skills are imparted through – Induction
• Change is sought in the Outlook
• Subject Matter is a bigger section of people
e.g. humanity, followers, class, proletariat etc.
Spiritual Level
• One transcends the need of being guided by
anything or anyone
• Linguistic expressions are not always there
e.g. sweet eaten by a speechless
• Methodology is constraint free
• Objective is cosmic
• The word skill is redundant
• Life is a flow here a change in continuum
• Subject matter has been transcended here or
if it is there it is the self
