Technology Triangle
Question J
How do you imagine social
Interaction in 10 years, taking
into consideration the impact of
technology on human relations?
What is technology?
Technology is the culprit here as we humans were
just fine before it came and intrude on our face
time. So I’ll start by breaking down what technology is in
itself.
For me, these two definitions, from google, define it
succinctly as;
• The application of scientific knowledge for practical
purposes.
And as,
• Machinery or equipment developed from such scientific
knowledge.
How Social Interaction Have Evolved
“The invention of the wheel has paved the way for
transportation and industry, while the ability to make energy
from coal and oil and gas has shaped entire societies” (Zoe
O’Donoghue)
Humans have come a long way in terms of technology
from striking stones for fire to automatic cookers.
Traditionally, we socialized around food, events (birthdays,
baby showers, weddings, etc), dates ( lunch,
dinner,
picnics etc), sports. We now have fancy restaurants
and all.
You can even wine and dine in space if you want. You can go have
a date in the cosmic region or
somewhere up in the skies. We
have upped the ante in the experience.
Today
Social interaction is a different ball game. It spreads
along a wide spectrum of social and behavioural
sciences. We rally around causes; from patriarchy to
feminism, from conservatism to liberalism. It is still
the same things we fight and crave for, but in a
different way.
We connect with each other more than ever today.
Information is faster, the internet as globalized the
world.
Will technology change our ability to sit down
as a family and eat together, attend birthdays et al?

No. Rather, it will help us stay in touch and
abreast of happenings. For busy people that
hardly have time to visit, technology can allow them
buzz their friends and family to tell them they are
on their mind.
I see technology regarding social interaction as the
introvert’s way out. It is a form of expression. Little
wonder most techies are introverts. For the most part,
extroverts have helped expand the scope by taking
their social attributes to the social media where they
can be who they are and more.
We were taught manners for a reason, for the same
reason is why we would continue to teach the next
generation. We would only include ‘digital
etiquettes’.
Conclusion
We are in an era defining paradigm shift. Humans are
basically self preservative, we push the edge in
technology to create a more comfortable world.
We inherited a world quite alright, but we are creating our
own. Our intelligence and survival instincts identify
that we have no where else to go, it also recognizes that
the Earth’s resources are depleting and we have to
make do with what we have hence the need for
conservation.
All our technological advancement is aimed at survival,
within which there is room for other things that makes life
interesting and enhances our productivity.
Conclusion Contd
While technology will impact the way we care for and
about ourselves, the way we consume information and
all, we would fundamentally remain who we are
because technology/technological advancement thrives
on the intrinsic human nature of work, play, love,
exploration etc. it will enhance the way we do what we
love to do, albeit in a whole new way.
Whatever does not address that need, would not even
be considered in the first place, and whatever addresses
it by allowing us to express ourselves in a way different
from how we used to is what we would call
‘innovation’, even in the next 10 years.
THANK YOU
