This document presents research on using inertial body sensor networks to estimate gait speed. The researchers developed methods to extract spatial information from the sensors, including refining a human gait model, developing a mounting calibration procedure, and combining the approaches. Experiments showed the combined method achieved gait speed estimation accuracy within 0.09 m/s compared to treadmill speeds, a significant improvement over previous methods. Future work will involve more subjects, gait types, speeds and developing individualized calibration.
