Factor
Trees
WHAT: TO BE ABLE TO FACTOR A RANGE OF
NUMBERS AND EXPAND AND SIMPLIFY THE
ANSWER.
WHY: COVERING UNIT 3 B2 WHICH IS
FACTORISING, ALSO FOR NOVEMBER MOCK
EXAM.
What is a factor tree?
A factor tree is a easy way of dividing and
using factors.
What is a factor tree?
COPY THE BELOW DIAGRAM IN YOUR
BOOK. (DRAW IN PENCIL FILL IN WITH
PEN)
5
110
22
You pick a number
You then pick a prime number that can go into the number you chose. (FACTOR)
For example, 5 goes into 110, 22 times. You put 22 on right and no in circle as it is not
a prime number. Then you circle the prime number which is always to the left of that
number. Watch the animation on the next page, it will explain how to do it.
What is a factor tree?
5
120
24
I picked 5, it goes into 120 (factor) and it is a prime number. I then wrote 24 on the right
as it is not a prime number and it is how many 5`s go into 120. Always use and circle
prime numbers on the left.
What is a factor tree?
You then carry on until
you get to 2 prime
numbers. So you carry
on dividing.
2 is circled because it
is a prime number.

3
Now you have divided, you
have ended up with 2 prime
numbers. 6 divided by 2 = 3
Both 2 and 3 are prime numbers
so are in circles. Now you need
to expand an simplify.

3
To expand you write out the
numbers in the circles. For this
diagram you would do the following.
5x2x2x2x3
If you type 5x2x2x2x3 into a calculator
you would get 120.
To simplify all you do is take the expanded
version. 5x2x2x2x3 and do the following
1 five = 5
3 two`s = 2 squared
1 three = 3
so simplified version is 5x2 squared x 3
What is a factor tree?
So you have got the example in your book,
on your whiteboards answer each of the follwoing
numbers but draw the factor tree, the
expanded and simplified version.
