• In Ramadan, [the 9th of the lunar Islamic year] Muslim
fast in obedience to Allah’s command and in gratitude
for Allah’s Grace for revealing His Glorious Book, Al-
Qur’an.
• Fasting is to abstain from eating, drinking and intimate
intercourse from dawn to sunset.
• Al-Baqarah 2:183 O you who believe! Observing As-
Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was
prescribed for those before you, that you may
become Al-Muttaqûn (the pious).
• FAST A CERTAIN NUMBER OF DAYS:
• Al- Baqarah-2:184 [Observing Saum (fasts)] for a fixed
number of days, but if any of you is ill or on a journey, the
same number (should be made up) from other days.
• And as for those who can fast with difficulty, (e.g. an old
man, etc.), they have (a choice either to fast or) to feed
a Miskîn (poor person).
• But whoever does good of his own accord, it is better for
him. And that you fast, it is better for you if only you know.
• Allah's Apostle said, "Fasting is a shield (or a
screen or a shelter).
• So, the person observing fasting should avoid
sexual relation with his wife and should not
behave foolishly and impudently,
• And if somebody fights with him or abuses him,
he should tell him twice, 'I am fasting. (S. Al-Bukhari)
• The Prophet added, By Him in Whose Hands my
soul is, the smell coming out from the mouth of a
fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than
the smell of musk.
• (Allah says about the fasting person), 'He has left
his food, drink and desires for My sake. The fast is
for Me.
• MULTIPLIED TEN TIMES:
• So I will reward (the fasting person) for it and the
reward of good deeds is multiplied ten times. [Sahih
Al-Bukhari Vol.3- 118]
• Quran 2:185 The month of Ramadân in which was revealed
the Qur'ân, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the
guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong).
• WHEN MY SLAVES ASK YOU CONCERNING ME:
• Quran 2:186 And when My slaves ask you (O Muhammad )
concerning Me, then (answer them), I am indeed near (to
them by My Knowledge).
• I respond to the invocations of the supplicant when he calls
on Me (without any mediator or intercessor). So let them
obey Me and believe in Me, so that they may be led a right.
• Quran 2:187. It is made lawful for you to have sexual
relations with your wives on the night of As-Saum (the
fasts).
• They are Lîbas [i.e. body cover, or screen, or Sakan, (i.e.
you enjoy the pleasure of living with her), for you and
you are the same for them.
• Allâh knows that you used to deceive yourselves, so He
turned to you (accepted your repentance) and forgave
you.
• So now have sexual relations with them and seek that
which Allâh has ordained for you (offspring), and eat
and drink until the white thread (light) of dawn appears
to you distinct from the black thread (darkness of
night), then complete your Saum (fast) till the nightfall.
AND DO NOT HAVE SEXUAL
RELATIONS WITH THEM
• Quran 2:187 And do not have sexual relations
with them (your wives) while you are
in I'tikâf (i.e. confining oneself in a mosque for
prayers and invocations leaving the worldly
activities) in the mosques.
• These are the limits (set) by Allâh, so approach
them not. Thus does Allâh make clear
His Ayât (proofs, evidences, lessons, signs,
revelations, verses, etc.) to mankind that they
may become Al-Muttaqûn (the pious).
WHY WE FAST?
• We Fast in obedience to Allah’s command, and because Allah
(swt) loves those who fast.
• To develop and control on our material desires.
• To control ourselves in front of all things prohibited by Allah
(swt).
• To make us remember the needy who suffer from hunger and
deprivation. Hence, to become more sympathetic to them and
help them with part of Allah (swt} has bestowed upon us.
• To check our engrossment in our desires, and increase our care
for our spiritual entity through intensifying our deeds and acts
of worship in this month of Al-Qur’an.
• To striving for Ihsan [righteousness and sincerity]
means to worship Allah (swt) as one seeks Him,
and even though one does not see Him, He sees
all.
• To gaining Taqwaa, Allah (swt) said; O ye who
believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was
prescribed to those before you that ye may
(learn) self-restraint. [2:183]
• Taqwaa in this case means to make a shield
between oneself and Allah’s anger and Hellfire.
• To increase our share of sincerity, conscience, discipline as
well as many healthful benefits.
• To acquiring patience and strong will. Allah (swt) has
mentioned patience more than seventy times in the
Qur’an and has commanded patience in more than
sixteen ways in his book.
• DAWOOD BIN HIND FASTED FORTY YEARS:
• And even his family did not know it.
• He would take his lunch from them, but would give it as
charity on the way.
• He would then return in the night and eat with his family.
[Al-Jumuah 4&5 1418H]
• WHY I FAST?
• When we break our Fast?
• Has this fasting made us fear Allah (swt)
more?
• Has it protect ourselves from the Hellfire?
• This is achieved by reciting and reflecting on Al-Qur’an during
night and day,
• Attending the taraweeh prayers, remembering Allah (swt),
• Sitting in circle with knowledgeable and for those who can
making Umrah
• And those who can making I`tikaaf [seclusion] in the last ten
knights of Ramadan, so as to leave all worldly pursuits and
seclude oneself in a masjid just thinking of Allah (swt), so as
to bring oneself closer to Allah (swt).
• Being more charitable: Ibn Abaas said, ‘The Prophet (sas)
was the most charitable amongst the people, and he used to
be more so in the month of Ramadan, Jibreel used to meet
him on every night of Ramadan till the end of the month....”
[Sahih Al-Bukhari]
• The virtues of fasting are great indeed, and one of
the things reported in the saheh ahadeeth is that
Allah has chosen fasting for Himself,
• And He will reward it and multiply the reward
without measure, as He says:
• “Except for fasting which is only for My sake, and I
will reward him for it.” [In the Hadeeth Qudsi - Al-Bukhaari]
• WILL NOT BE REFUSED:
• And the du’aa’ of the fasting person will not be
refused. (reported by al-Bayhaqi, 3/345; al-Silsilat al-Saheeh, 1797)
• THE FASTING PERSON HAS TWO MOMENTS
OF JOY
• One when he breaks his fast,
• And one when he meets his Lord and rejoices
over his fasting. (reported by Muslim, 2/807.)
• FASTING WILL INTERCEDE;
• Fasting will intercede for a person on the Day of
Judgement,
• And will say, “O Lord, I prevented him from his
food and physical desires during the day,
• So let me intercede for him.” (Reported by Ahmad, 2/174.)
• Fasting is a protection and a strong fortress
that keeps a person safe from the Fire. (Reported
by Ahmad, 2/402; Saheeh al-Targheeb, 1/411.)
• SEVENTY YEARS’ DISTANCE FROM THE FIRE:
• Whoever fasts one day for the sake of Allaah,
Allaah will remove his face seventy years’
distance from the Fire. (Reported by Muslim 2/808)
THE GATES OF PARADISE ARE OPENED
• “When Ramadaan begins, the gates of Paradise are opened
and the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are put in
chains.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, al-Fath, no. 3277)
• FASTING IN RAMADAN IS EQUIVALENT TO FASTING TEN
MONTHS. (See Musnad Ahmad, 5/280; Saheeh al-Targheeb, 1/421)
• HE WHO GIVES FOOD FOR A FASTING PERSON:
• The Prophet (sas) said, “He who gives food for a fasting
person to break his fast, he will receive the same rewards as
him, without nothing being reduce from the fasting person’s
reward.” [At-Tirmidhee]
• It was the practice of the people of
Madeenah to get their children to fast with
them.
• When the children would cry of hunger and
thirst, their parents would distract their
attention by giving them some sort of toy to
play with.
• The children would break their fast with their
parents. [Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 3.118]
A GATE IN PARADISE CALLED AR-
RAYYAN
• Narrated by Sahl The Prophet said, There is a gate in
Paradise called Ar-Rayyan, and those who observe
fasts will enter through it on the Day of Resurrection
and none except them will enter through it.
• It will be said, 'Where are those who used to observe
fasts?' They will get up, and none except them will
enter through it.
• After their entry the gate will be closed and nobody
will enter through it. [Sahih Al-Bukhari HadithHadith 3.120]
DIFFERENT GATES OF PARADISE
• Narrated byAbu Huraira Allah's Apostle said, "Whoever gives two kinds (of
things or property) in charity for Allah's cause, will be called from the gates
of Paradise and will be addressed, 'O slaves of Allah! Here is prosperity.'
• GATE OF THE PRAYER:
• So, whoever was amongst the people who used to offer their prayers, will be
called from the gate of the prayer;
• THE GATE OF JIHAD:
• And whoever was amongst the people, who used to participate in Jihad, will
be called from the gate of Jihad;
• THE GATE OF AR-RAYYAN:
• And whoever was amongst those who used to observe fasts, will be called
from the gate of Ar-Rayyan;
• THE GATE OF CHARITY:
• Whoever was amongst those who used to give in charity, will be called from
the gate of charity.
• Narrated byAbu Huraira The Prophet said, "Whoever
does not give up forged speech and evil actions,
• Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink
(i.e. Allah will not accept his fasting.)" [S. Al-Bukhari H. 3.127]
• ALL THE DEEDS OF ADAM'S SONS ARE FOR THEM
• Narrated byAbu Huraira Allah's Apostle said, "Allah
said, 'all the deeds of Adam's sons (people) are for
them.
• Except fasting which is for Me, and I will give the
reward for it. [Sahih Al-Bukhari H. 3.128]
• Qur'an 2:201 "Our Rubb! Give us in this world that
which is good and in the Hereafter that which is
good, and save us from the torment of the Fire!"
