INTRODUCTION
Project Overview: A comprehensive strategy to address plastic
consumption and promote recycling.
Key Objectives: Reduce plastic waste, encourage recycling, and raise
awareness.
Methods: Financial incentives, technology integration, and education.
Collaboration: Partnering with the Ministry of Environment and
Climate Change.
Design Thinking: 1
EMPATHIZE
Environmental impact: pollution
Greenhouse gas emissions which contribute to
climate change
Sealife & habitat destruction
Health risks
Conservation of natural resources
Pollution reduction
Economical benefit
Diversion of waste from landfills and Sealife.
waste
What is the impact of waste on our planet?
What role does recycling play in this context?
Overconsumption and excessive generation of
waste
Inefficient waste management
Lack of reuse of items by the community
Lack of awareness about consequences of waste
What causes this impact?
Lack of awareness amongst people
Inadequate recycling in Qatar
Our continued use of single-use plastics and
materials
What annoys or irritates you about what you have found?
Design Thinking: 2
Description: minimizing single-use items
and preserving natural resources.
What is the theme of the gripes on your
poster/what heading or description did
you record on it?
The theme: recycling.
Gripe and End Goal
Achieve a sustainable and environmental friendly waste management
system based on the recycling in Qatar
Promote awareness on single-use items.
Preserve the environment in Qatar and limit waste pollution.
Preserve our sea life.
Enforce an effective policy that ensures cleanliness of Qatar through
upcoming generations.
What do you want to achieve to resolve your gripes?
How might we increase public awareness about responsible waste management and recycling in
Qatar?
How might we include it in education?
How might we improve recycling facilities in Qatar and encourage people to recycle?
How might we convince people and businesses to reduce their use of single-use plastics and
materials?
How might we accelerate the progress in waste reduction efforts while maintaining development
in Qatar?
Think about what you want to achieve and phrase it as a sentence beginning with ‘How might-
we…’ You may come up with multiple questions.
Design Thinking: 3
End User Research
Surveys
Interviews with locals
Case studies
Data analysis
Social media platform
communities
Observational research
Feedback from Orgs and Experts
Say
How will you find out what your end
user group says about waste and
recycling?
Conduct Online surveys in
universities and among local societies.
Engage in interviews with local
community members.
Analyze case studies of similar user
groups.
Join social media platform
communities where users discuss
waste and recycling.
Seek feedback from environmental
organizations and experts
Do
How will you find out what your end user
group does about waste and recycling?
Conduct surveys and
interviews
Organize focus group
discussions
Feedback forms
Analysis of user data
Think
How will you find out what your
end user group thinks about waste
and recycling?
Assess their reactions
Read their body language
Analyze their comments and
feedback based on that well
determine their position
Feel
How will you find out how your end
user group feels about waste and
recycling?
Design Thinking: 4
Monitor End User Consultation Activities
Research Survey
Interview Data collection
Design Thinking: 5
Say
What does your end user group say
about waste?
• The public in general recognizes
the value of recycling and garbage
management.
• Some do not know of any recycling
facilities
• Guidelines for recycling are
unclear
• Lack of motivation, as majority of
people can afford buying rather than
reusing
Recycling is a popular activity that
many people engage in at home.
There are no plastic recycling
facilities so they do not recycle
plastic.
Different people have different
recycling habits; some recycle every
day while others do it less
frequently.
A large chunk of people do not
recycle
Do
What does your end user group do
about waste?
Recycling is an essential step in
preserving the environment and
minimizing harm.
While some people may believe that
their own efforts are insignificant,
others may be more positive about
the effects of recycling.
Some think recycling is inconvenient
Media needs to shed more light on
recycling
Think
What does your end user group think
about waste?
worry and concern for the environment.
Dissatisfaction with current recycling
facilities
Qatari media does not do recycling
enough justice
they would be motivated to recycle if
they get money in exchange of
recyclables
They could recycle if its more
convenient.
Recycling often might give some people
a sense of achievement.
Feel
How does your end user group feel about
waste?
Empathize
Proposed Plan to Reduce Plastic Consumption and Promote Recycling
Design Thinking:7
Define and Ideate
Plastic Bottle Charge:
Introduce a 0.25 euro charge on
plastic water bottles, with a return
refund system.
Grocery Store Rewards for Recycling:
Install weighing machines in stores,
connected to their apps for rewards,
including coupons and loyalty points
Raising Awareness:
Mandate recycling facilities in grocery
stores and run educational campaigns and
TV ads on recycling.
Include recycling education in school
curriculums and promote it on Qatari TV
channels.
Grocery Store App Integration:
Add recycling company contact info to
store apps for convenient home pickups.
Final Plan:
Partner with the Ministry of Environment to create a recycling
truck for home pickups, rewarding residents based on recyclable
weight.
Design Thinking:8
Ideate and Prototype
1. Read and talk through all feedback received.
2. Sort feedback into groups/categories.
3. Work on ideas for to make adjustments or changes to your
design solution (not your prototype).
4. Work together to agree on changes to be made.
5. Develop a new prototype of your updated design solutio
