Access for All The Columbus Community Fitness Center
The Problem Right now, you are only allowed to use the fitness center if you are under the supervision of a school employee Anyone who wishes to lift when they get off work, or at anytime that is not school hours, can not, unless there happens to be a coach in the fitness center
The Problem Continued One of the main reasons for the center being closed is because of a few isolated incidents of vandalism. Due to this vandalism, the school changed the locks, rendering everyone’s keys invalid. Now, only coaches and school employees have keys to the fitness center.
The Solution We propose putting in a proximity card system, where anyone who purchased a card would have around the clock entrance to the fitness center. Each person would have their own card, and when it was scanned, the proximity card reader would create a record of it.
The Solution Cont…. The reader would be hooked up to the main-frame computer of the school. Records of who entered and when would be instantly accessible by someone designated to check the entry log.
Solution Cont….. We would combat the vandalism problem using a motion sensing camera. The camera would take pictures of the entrance whenever its motion sensor was activated.
Solution Cont….. We would have multiple pictures on file of anyone who ever entered the fitness center. If anyone was caught illegally accessing the fitness center, we would have visual evidence.
Liability Liability is a huge concern with this project Even if someone signed a waiver/release form, and got injured lifting at school, the school could theoretically be sued. If, however, there was a trained supervisor at the fitness center, the school would be absolved of most to all liability.
Liability continued We would set up a volunteer schedule for supervision of the fitness center At different times, a trained supervisor would be in the fitness center, and if you had a proximity card, you could lift. The proximity cards would only be enabled at a time that the supervisor is scheduled to be there.
Liability Solution Another possible solution to the liability problem is to have everyone who purchases a proximity card take a weight training class before they get the card. This class could be taught by one of the supervisors, and would advise students on how to lift safely.
Supervisors We have several prospective supervisors already. They are all trained in weights safety, and many are school employees or coaches.
Costs: Proximity Card Reader: $200-$300 Lock: $200-$300 Motion Sensing Camera: $60 Proximity cards $.50-4.00 a piece Total: $700, a fee which could be paid buy people purchasing cards
