FEEDBACK ON
YOUR FIRST
ANALYSIS
FIRST GO
• It is important that you realise that you did not write up this analysis as a full essay:
because I did not ask for a full essay this time;
• This time, I was more interested in you having a go at utilising your knowledge that
you have gained over the past half term;
• I am going to go over how you structure the real essay later.
WWW OVERALL
• Applying technical vocabulary;
• Using lots of examples from the extract;
• Impressed with the level of detail – excellent first effort;
• Most of you are starting to link these ideas to representations of gender,
using ideas of stereotypes and binary opposites in your responses, well
done.
EBI OVERALL – LET’S PROGRESS
• Not all of the examples you were selecting from the extract were
relevant. This means that some of you were not consistently answering
the question. Only write about what is there, and what is relevant to
answering the question;
• Some of you were not using technical vocabulary, but you were
describing the scene using casual and colloquial language. You have a
glossary, and you have already applied this vocabulary in your work so
far. APPLY YOUR VOCABULARY WHEN IT MATTERS;
• We need to consistently link ideas to stereotypes, gender (in this case)
and BOTH genders.
THE EXAM.
• The exam lasts for 2 hours. You will have 1 hour to do section A
(the representation section).
• Remember, you have 15 mins to watch the extract 4 times, and
make notes. Watch the extract in full first, no notes. Then the
other 3 times, you will make notes. Then you write your essay for
45 minutes.
• SECTION A IS MARKED OUT OF 50.
• Then you spend 1 hour on section B. THE WHOLE EXAM IS
WORTH 50% OF YOUR AS GRADE.
THE EXAM
Section A assesses the following AOs:
AO1 = Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of media concepts,
contexts and critical debates.
AO2 = Apply knowledge and understanding when analysing media
products and processes, and evaluating their own work (when relevant) to
show how meanings and responses are created.
THE EXAM
For section A, the marks are distributed as follows:
20 marks for your explanation, analysis and argument.
20 marks for the examples you give (relevant ones only).
10 marks for your use of accurate terminology.
TOTAL = 50.
STRUCTURE OF YOUR ESSAY
Read the handout. This is the structure. Use it. No
excuses of ‘I don’t know how to start’/ ‘I don’t know
what to write about next’. Bring this with you to every
lesson from now on.
HOW TO RESPOND TO THE FEEDBACK
• You must respond to the feedback. You can do this in two ways:
– Make a change to your work based on my suggestions for
improvement. If you do this, you must do it in a different coloured
font from the rest of your work, so I can easily see the change you
have made.
– Responding to my comments/questions by leaving a comment on
your blog post. If you do this, it must be a detailed response, with
justifications for your ideas.
