Definition of Figurative Language
Figurative language has the
ability to be more impacful than
literal writing it can expand
readers interpretations and
broaden their imaginings.
Function
The primary function of
figurative language is to
force readers to imagine
what a writer wants to
express.
Types of Figurative Language
• Figure of Speech Comparison
• Figure of Speech Insinuation
• Figure of Speech Affirmation
Figure of Speech Comparison
• Simile
Simile is a part of figurative language in English
uses the conjunction such as as, like, to express
the comparison two different things. For
example:
- Busy as a bee
- They fought like cats and dogs
• Metaphor
Metaphors only make sense when the
similarities between the two things being
compared are apparent of readers understand
the connection between the two words. For
example:
- He has a heart of stone
- You are my sunshine
• Personification
Personification gives human characteristics to
inanimate objects, animals, or ideas. For
example:
- The sun greeted me this morning.
- Opportunity knocked at his door.
• Eponym
Eponym gives a name to something and the
name is used for declaring its nature. For
example:
- Elizabethan Age
- Alzheimer’s disease
• Synecdoche
Synecdoche consists of two types. They are; Pars
pro toto and Totem pro parte.
- Pars pro toto: partial represent whole
- Totem pro parte: whole things stand for its
part
• Metonymy
Metonymy is a figurative Language which used a
word to declare other things, because it has
relationship closely. For example:
- He is addicted to the bottle
- Let me give you a hand
• Antonomasia
Antonomasia is a literary term in which a
descriptive phrase replaces a person’s name. For
example:
- Mr. Grumps doesn’t want to listen to anyone,
and definitely doesn’t want to help anyone.
- My sweet little darling!
Figure of Speech Insinuation
• Irony
Irony is the opposite of what one means. Irony is
a hint that wants to say something with other
meaning on what it contains in the words. For
example:
- the police station gets robbed
- His friend’s hand was as soft as a rock
• Innuendo
Innuendo declares a critic with indirect
suggestion, and often seem not to hurt heart if
we see clearly. For example:
- When the parties always be held, his face
often seen clearly.
- You become a rich man because you did a bit
an official commercial.
• Paradocs
A paradox is a statement that contradicts itself
and still seems true somehow. For example:
- Nobody goes to the restaurant because it's
too crowded.
- I know that I know nothing.
Figure of Speech Affirmation
• Paronomasia
The examples above are Pun or Paronomasia
which uses similar sounds but it has totally
different meaning such as Can and Can has
different meaning. For example:
- I can see a can in that cannery.
• Hyperbole
Hyperbole is a figurative language technique
where exaggeration is used to create a strong
effect. With hyperbole, the notion of the
speaker is greatly exaggerated to emphasize the
point. For example:
- You snore louder than a freight train!
- Old Mr. Johnson has been teaching here since
the Stone Age.
CONCLUSION
Figurative language consists of 3 kinds of
type. The first type is figure of speech
comparison, include simile, metaphor,
personification, eponym, synecdoche, and
metonymy. The second type is figure os
speech insinuation, include irony,
innuendo, and paradocs. The third type is
figure of speech affirmation, include
paronomasia and hyperbole.
