“The Ministry of Education have

Health Education curriculum to meet
the individual needs of each student
and will be implemented in all

Trainees will:
• be able to identify PE protocols
• explain the need for PE protocols
• discuss and share strategies for implementing the protocols
Aims
What Are Protocols In PE?
The word ‘protocol’ refers to established behaviours that have been predetermined and used in Physical
Education classes. There should be predetermined ways for students to act in your classes.
You should establish the type of behaviour you want students to extend to you and to one another.
These Protocols form the foundation for the routines you expect the students to follow to create a positive and
productive environment .
The protocols should define the observable behaviors you expect.
Protocols
Space: entering and leaving the classroom/lesson :
To have students practice moving from the classroom to the PE area in a quiet and orderly manner.
Regardless of the way you begin the class, the routine needs to be practiced.
In some cases, the students may have to return to the classroom and practice the protocol again.
The important point is to realize that this is a protocol.
It is a routine to be followed EVERY time students go to PE.
Dressing for Physical Education:
Requiring students to wear a uniform: shoes for playing sports and a change of clothes during PE classes, this
needs to be compulsory.
Starting and stopping signal :
Once they entered the gym according to your protocol, you need a method to capture their attention: your voice,
use a hand clap or use of whistle.
Using whistle signals for attention:
blowing once = STOP, LOOK and LISTEN / 3 whistle blows could mean : COME and Stand By ME.
Practice and reward those who follow instructions, and work towards giving the signal only once.
Use of a white board:
Please try to implement this within your teaching. The white board is an excellent way to help children learn.
Learning objectives, key words, diagrams etc. will help students understand and visualise important factors of PE
Equipment protocols :
Three most common protocols to establish are :
1. Getting the equipment: how to get it out and set up safely.
1. Holding on the equipment: what to do with it and how to act.
1. Putting equipment away: how to put it away safely
Protocols for selecting partners, teams and groups :
Be careful not to damage young people's self esteem. Being picked last can be difficult for students to accept and
may cause problems with peers.
As with every protocol, there are exceptions. Some students are very difficult to work with as partners. With these
young people exceptions need to be made.
Art of teaching: how do we take care of a youngster feeling and remaining fair to all involved?
Use random numbers, teacher selects teams or running around and move in to the number the teacher shouts, for
example 4,5,6 (when desired number is reached the teacher can make this a team)
Try to come up with your own ideas.
Other Protocols
Important protocols to consider include what students do :
• When students do not bring kit
• During a fire drill
• When an accident or injury occurs
• About drinking water during the PE lesson
• When they need to go to the bathroom
• When they bring valuables to class
• Regarding the use of phone
Organisational Instruction
The challenge: to organize large groups of students in undefined spaces.
• What are the boundaries in a gym or field?
• Where do students go for instruction ?
• One type of instruction = tell the students what to do, with whom, where, which equipment .
When it is done with clarity, students understand and proceed quickly to the activity.
• BUT You have to make sure the students have learned the MANAGEMENT PROTOCOLS .
• If not , the instructions & demonstrations will be ineffective.
Decision to Practice Protocols
1. Most crucial is that protocols be consistently followed and reinforced.
1. They are designed so students know what to expect, which leads to a POSITIVE comfortable learning
environment.
1. When the students learn the behavior protocols at the beginning , you can devote more time to the content of
PE.
RULES – BE CLEAR, BE POSITIVE , BE CONSISTENT
Teaching Behaviour Protocols
• The management protocols to use is easy and relative to teachers
• The challenge is teaching those protocols until students know them .
Teachers skills to implement the protocols:
1. FIRM BUT WARM = The teacher exhibit a degree of firmness as well as warmness .
1. CRITICALLY DEMANDING = To have a built it expectation that students follow the protocols & the
insist they do
Developing Ownership
The behaviour protocols are followed more closely when students, and parents understand WHY they are
necessary – Also when they have a sense of ownership them.
HOW?
Discuss the rules to understand the importance maybe have the students design a set of rules.
Provide the protocols with the principal and teachers with a copy, with parents, perhaps in school newsletter.
GOAL : To develop a positive learning environment
Questions & Reflections
Thank you ☺
