In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Narrative device Our film follows the conventions of a typical slasher horror film. We followed a similar plot to the film “Shrooms” which is classified in this genre. We used a very typical narrative device of the slasher horror genre, in that our film opens with a chase that in a chronological sense does not fall at the beginning of the movie.HALLOWEEN II LINK Click on the link above to see the opening sequence to Halloween IIOUR FILM
Typical ConventionsOur film follows the typical convention of teenagers going somewhere secluded, behind the backs of their parents to do things teenagers want to do i.e drugs and have sex. As the parents are unaware, this invites something to happen to the teenagers.
Title Conventions HalloweenWe followed the typical white on black titles that are conventionally used in horror films such as “Shrooms” and “halloween”. ShroomsOur Film
Sound TRACKSound Track	We created our own soundtrack using garage band using similar conventions to other slasher horror’s. There are many films that use this same effect such as Halloween, Friday the 13th and many more. Click to hear our soundtrack
Sound effectsWe used heavy breathing and footsteps over our soundtrack to create tension and also added room tones to the second scene using soundtrack pro. The sound effect techniques are very conventional in movies in general when emphasizing something.
How does your media product represent particular social groups?ho
Costume and make-upTHE VICTIMThe victim: dressed casually compared to friend to show a lower social status and that she is not bothered by her appearance. This is also shown in the narrative in this scene. This character would be classified in a less popular social group – “nerds”.
We cast our victim to be a girl rather then a boy because it is a typical convention in all slasher horror’s. This is usually the case because women are scene to be more weak and venerable. The ExorcistA prime example of this is the film “the exorcist”, although in the original book the victim was a boy, when it came to producing the film they cast a girl to play the victim. Haloween II
The Sisterdressed smarter and more fashionable to give a higher status and to represent her vanity which is also shown through her personality. When watching this scene you can see the clear separation of social groups through the narrative. This character would be classified in a popular social group – “ the queen bee”Click the right photo to start clip
The Murderer We decided to dress our murderer in black and to never show his face. We did this because most murderer’s in films faces are either never shown or covered by a mask. Our FilmShroomsFreddie vs Jason
We cast our murderer as a man. We did this because it is a typical convention of murderer’s in slasher horror films. Men are usually cast because they are seemed to be more strong, powerful and aggressive. Halloween 2Freddie vs Jason
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
Distribution companies	As our film was a low budget film with an unknown cast, it would be unlikely to attract investment from mainstream distribution companies, although horror genres usually have global appeal. We would focus on attracting independent distribution companies such as Lionsgate and Momentum who specialize in supporting low budget film makers that create this genre.
Although our film is low budget and has an unknown cast, sometimes films like this are the most successful films that attract global appeal such as “The Blair Witch Project” and “Paranormal Activity”.Paranormal activity was made with a low budget and unknown cast. It was then posted on youtube and started attracting views through word of mouth. It was then scene by Steven Spielberg who brought the rights to the film and altered it. He then sold it to a big distribution company called The blair Witch ProjectParanormal Activity
Unique Selling pointsUsually, when distributors are looking for a unique selling point of a film, they are looking for things such as:A-list castHigh concept high budget filmPopular genre
Our Unique Selling Points Our film differs from the usual unique selling points, however we believe this works in our favour:Horror’s have global appealThe fact our film was low budget it would be less expensive for distributors.Young cast attracts a young audience which we are aiming for. Horror’s usually have an unknown cast, therefore our unknown cast is an advantage.
What would be the audience for your media product?
Audience Audience: the audience that our film would attract, would most likely be between the ages of 15 and 24 which is good as these are the main ages of the population that go to the cinema.
Certification :If we took our media product to the bbfc, our film would be most likely to receive a certificate 15. because of our genre, we would automatically be losing out on family groups and young children. However, an interesting thing to consider, is in regards to horror films, the higher certificate it has, the more it appeals as it is considering to be more scary and gory.
How did you attract/ address your audience?
The best way to attract an audience is by advertisement through Trailer, Print, PR, TV and Internet. As horrors are a popular genre in media, we felt our genre would draw a large audience and attention. Our Narrative created an enigma with an intense build up of a girl running through the woods from a murderer. We felt our opening to the film would encourage the audience to continue watching. We made our characters around the same age as our target audience, enabling the audience to understand and relate to the characters.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
TECHNOLOGIESPRE PRODUCTION WE FOUND THE TECHNOLOGIES WE USED ALLOWED US TO BE EXTREMELY CREATIVE.
