I=Interviewer
K=Kristin (me)

I: Hi, what is your name? Where are you from? Please tell me a little bit about
yourself.

K: My name is Kristin Lowe and I am 17 years old. I am full American and this is
my 3rd year at ISB and I will be graduating in June of 2012.

I: What are you planning to do after you graduate?

K: I plan to attend a university in the United States, either in Michigan or in
Florida. I am planning to study nursing to become a nurse anesthetist.

I: What is an experience you have had in your high school career that can be used
to exemplify the four ways of knowing?

K: I have had so many memorable experiences throughout my high school
career, but this year winning the championship for soccer IASAS was
unforgettable. This event took place in October 2011 at Singapore American
School for the IASAS 30th anniversary. All first season sport teams traveled to
Singapore to compete in the tournament.

I: Why did you choose this specific event?

K: Since I was young, I have always loved and participated in sports, especially
soccer. I have played soccer all throughout my high school career at my old
school and here at ISB. For the 3 years I have been at ISB I have been on the
varsity and IASAS teams and each season has been unforgettable. Ultimately,
soccer is a sport I enjoy playing, and is also a physical activity in which I can
relieve stress from school.

I: Do you believe soccer has impacted yourself personally and as a student?

K: I believe this sport says so much about me personally and also as a student. I
am a competitive person therefore the competitive nature of the sport is
reflected in my school studies because it drives me to succeed in my classesand
reveals the need for time-management. Also, being a senior on the team and a
captain since my junior year it has taught me many leadership qualities that I can
apply throughout my studies and in other areas of my life. Soccer has also
impacted my social life allowing me to meet new teammates who have become
close friends.

I: Could you please explain the event?

K: Throughout the IASAS tournament our team was undefeated. We went to
every game mentally and physically prepared to play. In the final, we scored
within the first 5 minutes, now leaving the score at 1-0. This pumped up the team
and gave us more intensity on the field. Towards the end of the first half we
scored the second goal of the game, leaving us in good shape for the second half.
As the second half approached, the girls knew it was going to be more of a mental
game because both teams were exhausted, yet we could not let up our intensity.
At the end of the 35 minutes, ISB girls soccer team had earned the title of IASAS
soccer girls champions with a score of 2-0.

I: What ways of knowing relate to your event?

K: I believe all four ways of knowing, emotion, reason, perception, and language
all relate to my event, but emotion especially.

I: How does emotion directly relate to your experience?

K: Emotion was greatly evident in every player all throughout the tournament.
Emotion can be separated into two different categories: primary emotions and
social emotions. Social emotions relate to my team members and my
experiences. For example, the emotions of fear, guilt and pride were always a
mixture of emotions running through me. When we won a game, I felt great pride
of what we had accomplished, but when it was a close game and I was mentally
unprepared which caused me to physically let down as well, I felt guilt that I
would be letting my team down and fearful that we would then lose the game.

I: Did your primary and social emotions conflict?

K: There were definitely times when my primary emotions and my social
emotions conflicted with each other. For example, when I was physically tired
but did not want to feel the social emotion of guilt, I had to overcome these
conflicting emotions because as a captain and a senior I had to lead my team by
setting an example.

I: How do the other ways of knowing apply?

K: Perception did not play a large role, yet it still affected my experience because
there were expectations for other teams, our team, and myself that I had
assumed. Once we had beaten other teams and we had scored the highest points
in IASAS, I began to assume we would win our future games based off of the
previous knowledge and the skills the other teams had shown. Also, language
was revealed throughout this tournament as well. It was needed for
communication throughout the team. Without communication on the field, we
would not have been able to win. Lastly, reason played a great role on the field.
As the sweeper, the last defender on the field, I had to determine whether or not
to make a tackle or shuffle back with the attacker, while having to communicate
with my teammates all at the same time. Also, I had to logically position myself
between the ball and the goal at all times or else it would be detrimental to the
team.

I: What would you say you learned from this experience?

K: I learned how to apply reason, emotion, perception, and language to past
experiences. Also, I learned how to achieve my goals by withstanding mental
obstacles and physical hardships. Lastly, The use of language or communication
was extremely evident from this event.

I: How could you apply this knowledge in the future?

K: I can apply reason, emotion, perception, and language to similar situations in
the future. Also, by knowing the large roles the ways of knowing in everyday life
experiences, I can apply them such as this specific event of soccer IASAS 2011.
