This document presents a study that examines differences in public opinion toward Japan between South Koreans and Taiwanese. Through surveys and interviews conducted in both countries, the author finds that South Koreans have much more negative views of Japan compared to Taiwanese. The study hypothesizes this is due to differences in the historical experiences of Japanese colonial rule in each country. South Korea experienced greater violence and oppression under Japanese rule, while Taiwanese faced relatively less resistance. As a result, negative views have been passed down more strongly in South Korea than Taiwan regarding the Japanese period.
