OVERVIEW OF COMMON WEALTH GAMES IN INDIA • India was inducted into the games way back in the year 1934 and it hosted the common wealth games tournament in the year 2010 for first time • The Games were hosted at the Capital City New Delhi • There were participation of 71 countries and around 2000 staff & 18000 volunteers were there in the event • It was a 12 days sports event & event security arrangements were also tight during the common wealth games • Around 12 billion Rupees were spent on Infrastructure development • 20 cities were developed for Tourist destination • A special village was made for Commonwealth game called as “Game Village” • The official song of “Jiyo Utho Bado jeeto” was composed by celebrated Indian musician A.R. Rahman • The Official Mascot was “Shera”

FUNDS ALLOCATED FOR THE VENUES • The initial planned amount was Rs.1,000 crore but later it was revised to Rs.2,460 crore • The amount spend on Jawaharlal Nehru stadium was 961 crore • On Ferozshah kotla stadium was 85 crore • On Indira Gandhi stadium was 669 crore • Dhyan chand hockey stadium was 262 crore • The budget was revised on account of revised cost indices and escalation, change in scope of work as per the requirement of venue, various additions and deletions to make venue suitable for various standards and addition of service tax, quality assurance and contingencies

- 9. • During the times of Games, Delhi Government had spent huge amount on Extension of Delhi metro line • Amount Spend was around 3000cr • Delhi government spent around 10 lakh on each pillar but actual cost was 7 lakh per pillar Metro Services

CONT. • Kalmadi’s conduct at the 2010 has come under scrutiny 2010 Commonwealth Games • On January 8th 2012 Suresh Kalmadi was granted Bail by the Delhi High Court • Suresh Kalmadi was in Jail for 10 months and the court asked him to pay a surety amount of Rs 5 lakhs • Kalmadi was accused in the CWG graft case and was allowed by a Delhi court on 13 July 2012 to go to London for 2012 Olympics
