Editor's Notes

  • #3: Welcome! Introduce team. (PK) *Show sizzle video* Love that video—really sets the tone for our conversation. Ice Breaker (CK) Tonight is all about giving you information, answering questions – let’s make this interactive and a conversation -ask questions throughout *Show sizzle video*
  • #5: Matthew - We are doing something brand new for the EDP for programs next year that you are all interviewing for – having separate programs for the buying and planning track. Since moving to the SVI – single view of inventory, we believed it was important to identify core skill sets earlier in the process. One thing to note is despite you applying for your role of preference, as you go through the interview process, our executives might think you are better for one or the other program so we may be changing what program you become considered for.
  • #6: Matthew - In this new SVI / OMNI world, the customer is at the center of every decision our merchants make, more so now than ever before. This is what we call our Wheel of Influence & it really is a great snapshot of how all our merchants work together. Each piece of the wheel is dependent on the other, so for example, any decision our buyers & digital merchants make are going to impact our merch, inventory and financial planners. This was done to create a more seamless experience for the customers.
  • #7: Matthew - The buying track core skills that apply both for omni buying and digital merchandising include (read bullets)
  • #8: Matthew - The Planning side has core skills that include (read bullets)
  • #14: Connie What is the difference between a manager and a leader? Steve Jobs said it best - “Management is about persuading people to do things they did not want to do, while leadership is about inspiring people to do things they never thought they could” [Click]
  • #15: Connie At Ross, this is what our store management program is all about. Management and leadership go hand in hand. But what sets a good manager apart is that they have to be a leader first. [Click]
  • #16: Kevin So where do those leaders come from? Ross emphasizes leadership development In 2016, 80% of all Store Management roles were filled internally [Click]
  • #17: Kevin Here is our career path [Needs more detail] [Click]
  • #18: Kevin What does a typical Day look like? Executing processes Actively participating in and leading Store Leadership visits Ensuring proper customer service merchandise presentation and organization Learning to forecast staffing needs accurately and understanding the retail operations of a multi-million dollar store Developing teams through effective training and coaching (recognition and reward) The role you play as a leader includes Your actions Your influence What you say and how you listen Your ability to inspire The way you show your team that are in it alongside them [Click]
  • #19: Kevin I can stand up here today and tell you honestly that the program at Ross works. As I said before, I’m a product of the program. The door to my Ross career first opened in spring 2012 when I graduated from Sacramento State University and started as an Assistant Store Manager as a college hire. [Click]
  • #20: Kevin [Animation runs on it’s own] I worked as an ASM for 1.5 years and then was relocated to Santa Rosa, CA, to take over my own store. [Click]
  • #21: Kevin The store was above average in terms of sales volume. With a staff of 67 Associates and 4 direct Reports Here we are having some fun {NEEDS EXPLANATION] SM for  little over a year before moving into my current role as and HR Specialist- University Recruiting   [Click]
  • #22: Kevin I was the Store Manager there for a little over a year before moving into my current role as an HR Specialist- University Recruiting It was a great journey that continues today [Click]
  • #23: Kevin While we don’t publicize it much, Ross has a strong corporate social responsibility (CSR) program committed to creating value for our Associates and our communities. There are four pillars to our CSR program: Empowering our associates Supporting our communities Operating Sustainably Conducting Business Ethically There is a lot of detail to each of these but, in the interest of time, I’ll only focus on one today. If you like more detail, stop by our booth later and pick up one of these [Click] to find out more. [Click]
  • #24: Kevin Right now I’ll focus on sharing some additional detail about one of the pillars – Supporting Our Communities The community inside the store – your team – isn’t the only place where leadership is needed. Investing in the communities where we operate is just as important at Ross. We support many organizations [click] that work in our communities, with an emphasis on programs that help build academic achievement and life skills in the young people who need us most. One of those partnerships is with the Boys and Girls Club of America. Every year Ross raises money through customer donations in our stores and associate donations in our corporate offices for the BGCA. Over the history of our partnership, Ross has raised over $11.5 million for the BGCA Take a look for yourself. [Click to play VIDEO]
  • #27: Today it’s even more important for us to remain focused on the customer. We’ve made significant investments to enable customers to shop seamlessly across stores and online Service & Experience Examples – Buy Online, Pick up in Stores; Curbside Delivery – Leverage existing technology investments that make it seamless for a customer to shop online, and if they choose come to a store to pick up their purchase Product Increasing relevance with younger customers – Topshop; Madewell; Olivia Palermo Capabilities Enabling a seamless experience across stores and online HauteLook returns to Rack; TextStyle; Pinterest Buyable Pins – just a few ways we have integrated online, stores and mobile to enable a seamless experience.
  • #29: Our biggest asset is our people Note: If you don’t have time for the full presentation you can pick and choose several of the topics below to discuss but you don’t need to discuss all of them if time is tight. Talk about: Majority of our leadership started on the sales floor Inverted pyramid Employee empowerment – our employees are empowered to make the customer feel good and assist them in the way they want to be served. This approach gives employees freedom to be creative and build meaningful relationships with the customer. “Heroic” tales of people going above and beyond What’s important to you? Is there alignment in our values and yours? We have been on the Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For list since its inception. Last year we ranked # _____. We have also been recognized by a variety of other organizations as well. Discuss what we look for as characteristics/qualifications when we are hiring at Nordstrom. Selling – Experience in retail sales is a plus, but we can teach you this skill set if you have a competitive nature. Selling at Nordstrom is commission based so - you understand and are motivated by selling more to make more. Service – Do you get great satisfaction in exceeding expectations? Is making someone look and feel better than when they walked in the door motivating to you? Fashion – The world of fashion and retail is exciting to you. You’re interested in trends, both in fashion and in the retail industry. Mobility – You’re a bit of an explorer. You want to see other parts of the country. If you’re mobile, your growth opportunities are exponential. If you’re not, we still have plenty of local opportunities for you. Team – You’re comfortable and confident working with people from different backgrounds and personalities. Results – The idea of competition is motivating to you. You consistently set goals and achieve results. Being #1 is important to you. You get tremendous job satisfaction from your results. You can go anywhere in this company with a great track record, especially if you’re mobile. Your current performance is your interview for the next job. Strong Promote From Within Practice All store facing leadership roles are promoted from within We promote between Nordstrom Full-Line Stores and Nordstrom Rack Promote from within = exponential career opportunities, especially if you’re mobile Working at Nordstrom can pay off - At $20.27 per hour (the company average for sales). - Assistant Department Manager and Department Manager salaries vary depending on volume responsibility and commission is a part of their overall compensation package. Department managers also have bonus potential. The road to leadership – store facing – starts on the selling floor, as a salesperson or intern. There are career opportunities for you to grow in our Nordstrom Full-Line stores, in Nordstrom Rack and in other areas of our company, including our Headquarters in Seattle. Ask “Why would it benefit you to start on our selling floor?” Answers: You learn the business from the ground up, you can’t manage or coach what you’ve never done, you understand our service philosophy, every successful store facing leader has started on the selling floor – there’s no better training ground. You don’t have to spend a lot of time on the selling floor. You just have to spend enough time to truly understand what it means to sell to and serve our customers. By the way, selling is a profession. It requires expertise, relationship building skills and the ability to influence. Throughout your career – no matter what path you choose – there is an element of selling, e.g., yourself, an idea, a suggestion, a business case, etc. If you can sell shoes (insert any other product), you can sell yourself, etc. Selling is also a gateway position, leading you to many other opportunities on the merchandising side, e.g., buying, buy planning, etc. If selling isn’t for you we have many other opportunities in other parts of our business.
