- 6. Navigate to www.census.gov The page should look something like this – cluttered, useless and difficult navigate.

- 9. After clicking on Data, navigate to, “American Fact Finder”:
- 10. Now navigate to, “Advanced Search”:
- 11. Now navigate to, “Geographies”:
- 12. Now navigate to, “Address” Enter your project address (e.g.: 3640 Investment Lane, West Palm Beach, FL 33402)
- 13. Now click: “Census Tract” – 5th link down from top (Geography Code: 140) “Block Group” – 6th link down from top (Geography Code: 150) Picture next page…
- 15. You should now see the selection in the top left
- 16. Now click, “Close” on the pop-up:
- 17. Now click, “Topics” on the left margin: Find, “People” and “Poverty”
- 18. Now click, “Close” on the pop-up You should now see the selection in the top left
- 19. Now choose a table link (I’ll use the 4th one down: ID - B17021)
- 20. The table displays: Block Group (Group #5 in our example) Census Tract (10.04 in our example)
- 21. By Census Tract– the table displays: Total number of individuals: 4,931 Total individuals with income below poverty: 1,457
- 22. Now we have to calculate the poverty rate for the Census Tract: 4,931÷ 1,457 = Poverty Rate of 29.55% Not done yet…need to get the poverty rate for the Block Group!
- 23. By Block Group – the table displays: Total number of individuals: 699 Total individuals with income below poverty: 193
- 24. Now we have to calculate the poverty rate for the Block Group: 193 ÷ 699 = Poverty Rate of 27.61% Ta Da!
