Finite (2006) http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v =b6VTsuoBk3M Charlotte Elson
Camera Angle, Movement and Position Opening shot - fade in of a ocean – gives a sense of peace and tranquillity. Micro Elements Ending shot- a slow zoom out from the man stood in the middle of the frame , in the ocean.
Framing Shows him in the right hand side of the frame , with an empty space next to him. Symbolizes and draws the viewer’s attention to his loss and the absence of a partner. The framing in this shot places the characters close together, but yet apart. As if there is a barrier between them. It also presents questions to the audience. Why are they distant, yet placed together?
Editing and Special Effects Introduction to first character. Out of focus, dreamlike and in slow motion . Disorientation? The use of quick, short cuts helped the film reach a conclusion and climax where the character could finally let go of his dead partner.
Mise- En- Scene Setting on the beach gives a calm and romantic atmosphere. Is a place usually associated with happiness and a carefree lifestyle. Significant because it is shown through flashbacks the couple spent a lot of time there. Lighting has been carefully considered in this shot and used to show the divide between the two characters . The woman is on one side of the ray of light and the man is on the other.
Sound Diegetic sound Dialogue between characters The sea waves crashing Running water Non- diegetic sound Original music by Chris George
Script Script is used very cleverly to develop the narrative , by carefully telling the audience what they need to know at the time and keep them guessing , but not revealing everything until the end. No actual physical contact between the two in the present. Hints at something not being right .
Titles/Institutional References “ Finite ” means having a limit, limited in quantity, degree, or capacity, bounded . This refers to the limit which is between the two main characters, life and death. Plain, simple font . Easy to read. Ties in with the simple subject of the film- life and death.
Macro Elements Genre Specific Elements (Codes & Conventions) This scene is typical of a romance genre. The couple holding hands, walking off into the distance. The sunset in the background. And the use of colours, light.
Narrative Foreshadowing technique by having the holographic photo video frame in the frame every time the woman was in the shot. Suggested a link early on. Audience will understand when the narrative switches to a flashback scene because the shot is usually slightly out of focus with bright lightning . The narrative is non-linear as the time line jumps around from present to past.
Representations Man is represented as alone and isolated . This is shown by the use of a long shot and the way the man is stood looking out to sea . Alone with just his thoughts, thinking about the past. Woman is brushing her hair, an everyday, ordinary thing to do. Shows she is totally at ease with the situation and has accepted it . The use of a close up shot draws the audiences attention to this. Conscious of her looks?
Audience Aimed at a young audience and people that enjoy the romance genre . Most likely more appealing to women. People that use YouTube.
Themes/Messages Themes: love, loss, a journey, devotion, denial. The journey of a man coming to turns with the loss of his partner and using different means to try and stay close to her. Throws the pyramid in the sea, symbolic. The man gaining a sense of closure. Eventually realizes he can’t live in the past forever and accepts the truth.
