Young Adult Committee For People First of NH October 26, 2009 Welcome Introduce Ourselves What Is People First of NH? How many young adult groups are there? Why do we need this committee? What is self-advocacy? What is important to you as a young-adult? What do you and other young adults need? What shall this committee do next? Plans for next meeting
Mission Statement We believe that people with disabilities should be treated as equals. We should be given the right to make the same decisions, and to have the same choices and responsibilities as anyone else. We should be allowed to make new friends and renew old friendships and be as independent as we are able. We should be able to live where we want to live and work where we want to work. We should also be included in society and not be singled out as being different. We will work to accomplish these ends in New Hampshire.
Organizational Structure of People First of New Hampshire
What does self-advocacy mean? Feel like you have a voice Speaking up for yourself Brings out the adult in you Allowing your opinion to be heard Taking charge of your life Speak-up for your rights Being independent  Living on your own Stick-up for others around you  Overcome your fears Brings the leader in you Let everyone know that you can speak-up for yourself
What is important to you as a young-adult? Having your own place Having friends you can relate to Having a voice Having your own car Owning your own house Being a leader Being like everyone else To learn to speak-up for your rights For people to listen to your ideas and comments Speaking up for others in your community
What do you and other young adults need? Working Having a home Staying healthy Food Having friends who can drive Internet Clothes TV Bed, furniture Love Loving relationships Being active, exercise and sports Getting out in the community Go to college High quality staff support Travel My own apartment Have friends Having a local self-advocacy groups for young adults
What do we want to do with the list?  What are ways to meet and address the needs? Share with the board Talk Communicate through computer Facebook Sending a letter to young-adult advocates Doing a presentation Make a webpage Have a chat session Survey What is the purpose of the committee? Similar to People First for young adults To have a voice for young-adults who have a disability Go to schools to teach other young adults Next Meeting November 30, 2009 4:30 – 6:30,  70 Pembroke Road, Concord.
