The unemployment rate in Latvia declined from 16.2% in the second quarter of 2011 to 14.4% in the third quarter according to a labour force survey. This was driven by job creation, although some jobs are likely seasonal. The number of employed persons increased by 24,000 compared to the third quarter of 2010. However, job growth is expected to slow in the coming year due to uncertainties in the external and internal economic environment. Over 55% of the unemployed have been seeking work for over a year, and 42,000 have given up hope of finding a job. Unless economic policies actively promote employment, job creation is likely to remain sluggish.
