Dr. Manikandan has completed Ph.D at 2018 in Dept. of Botany, Bharathidasan University. He has
experience and specialization in plant-microbes interaction, control the crop disease and induced
defense responses using polymer based nanoparticles. He had published his research findings in a peer
reviewed journals with high impact factor. He has experience in the field of modern biotechnology.
He is currently working in the foldscope research for plant disease diagnosis kit.
What’saboutfoldscope…
o It is an origami-based optical microscope unique invention by an Indian Scientist Dr. Manu
Prakash, Stanford University, USA.
o The foldscope is an ultra affordable, minimalist microscope made from folded paper and a lens.
o It’s price is less than a dollar.
o The lens that provides 140X magnification.
o It’s a weighs less and small enough to fit in a pocket.
o The foldscope has been instrumental in studying fungi, cataloging pollen, examining parasites,
and analyzing bacteria etc.
o It’s a portable diagnostic alternative for conventional microscope.

Objectives…
 To survey the plant diseases from fields and check the morphological characters
of plant pathogen and beneficial microbes using by foldscope.
 To develop smart phone based rapid and cheap diagnostics for plant diseases.
Methodology…
 Disease infected plant samples were collected from local fields for the screening of microbes.
 Infected tissues were scraped with dissection needle on the glass slide containing drop of
sterile distilled water. After to make the cover slip on the glass slides.
 Each prepared slides were examined using by foldscope (Code: 0002C6E80FBD).
 The images were captured by the help smart phone (Nokia 6.1) by focusing slide under the
lens of foldscope with 140X Magnification power and using LED illuminator as a source of
light.
