Two Criteria:
Verifiability and Notability

        1
Verifiability and reliable sources
What does verifiability mean?
Truth!!!
Truth!!!
Nope
Wikipedia is not collecting Truth.

Wikipedia is collecting information that can be
verified in a reliable source.
That is so much easier... truth is a very difficult
thing to prove.

So how do you verify information?
Verifiability = Cite reliable sources.

That's all verifiability means. You must verify that the
information has been published in a reliable source. As long as
a reliable source publishes the information, you can include the
content in Wikipedia.
What qualifies as a reliable source?
What qualifies as a reliable source?
              1. Mainstream Presses
Newspapers, news channels, and reliable online news
                    networks.
What qualifies as a reliable source?
                 2. Published books.
Yep, you'll want to go to the library for this project.
What qualifies as a reliable source?
              3. Magazines.
What qualifies as a reliable source?
                    4. Scholarly Journals
If the topic you choose has been studied by scholars or
scientists, then you really should include research from
                     scholarly journals.

(Scholars don't care about fancy logos.)
What does NOT qualify as a reliable
source?
                                        Self published sources.

Including: Facebook, Twitter, other Wikipedia articles, a personal website, a personal blog, a
company website, any promotional materials, a personal interview (that has not been
published in a reliable source), your own personal experience or knowledge.

I can not contribute to my own Wikipedia page, although I know myself quite well. Information from my friend's
band website is not a reliable source for information about that band.
The information must be verified by an INDEPENDENT SOURCE.
Ok, that's verifiability in a nutshell. We can talk more about
how to verify the information you want to include in the
Wikipedia articles you will use.

              Criteria 2: Notability
Notability: Is this information right for
Wikipedia?

Articles require:
    ○ significant coverage
    ○ in reliable sources
    ○ that are independent of the subject
Notability: Is this information right for
Wikipedia?

Articles require:
    ○ significant coverage can be a very
      subjective criteria. For your project,
you have to contribute 1000 words.
This means you need to find
      significant enough coverage from all
of your sources to write 1000 words.
Notability: Is this information right for
Wikipedia?

Articles require:
    ○ significant coverage
    ○ in reliable sources, which include news
      sources, magazines, books, academic
      journals.
Notability: Is this information right for
Wikipedia?

Articles require:
    ○ significant coverage
    ○ in reliable sources
    ○ that are independent of the subject, which
means that your research cannot include any
self-publishing. Independent sources are in no
way personally, financially, or socially connected
      to the topic.
Is Ringo notable? (remember Ringo?)
                                ● Ringo has a facebook
                                  page
                                ● Ringo is published on
                                  youtube
                                ● Ringo has been
                                  mentioned by name in a
                                  blog
                                ● Ringo has been
                                  mentioned by name as
                                  an anicdote by a friend
                                  who writes for
                                  NewsWeek. (this may or may
                                  not be true.)
Is Ringo notable? Nope... not yet!
                                     ● Ringo has a facebook page
                                       (Nope...must be an
                                       independent source)
                                     ● Ringo is published on
                                       youtube. (Nope..No
                                       Youtube)
                                     ● Ringo has been mentioned
by name in a blog. (No
                                       again... not an independent
                                       source)
                                     ● Ringo has been mentioned
by name as an anecdote by
                                       a friend who writes for
                                       News Week. (This is an
                                       independent source, but a
                                       "mention" is not "significant
                                       coverage")
Is Maru notable?

                   ● Maru has been
                     published on youtube
                   ● Maru has been
                     mentioned multiple
                     times in news sources
                   ● Maru has been
                     mentioned by name in
                     blogs.
                   ● Search for Maru_cat in
                     Wikipedia to figure out
why he is a notable cat.
When is a cat notable?

Neither of these cats are inherently better than the other. They both sit around
apartments, in cities, with owners who like to share their cuteness with the world.
What makes Maru notable? Media sources and large Internet communities agree
that Maru is a notable cat. Independent news sources have published information
about Maru the cat. That's all it takes.... Ringo could save a family from a burning
building, but if no one publishes the information in an independent, reliable
source, then Ringo will still not be notable for Wikipedia.
