               SCIENCE AND GEOMETRY ANCHOR ACTIVITY

                    “FORCE AND MEASURING TOGETHER”

Objective:

3.1 Measures the length and the perimeter of objects. Geometry

3.1 Demonstrates through examples how force influences the speed and movement of
objects. Science

C What if we have fun learning about force, speed, pushes,

pulls, length and much more all at the same time? D

Activate prior knowledge

 How did people measure things long ago?
 Questioning about forces, watching and describing pictures.

Individual Classwork

    Math book activities: Chapter 17, pages 380- 394
    Science Workbook activities: pages 89- 95A, 98
    Read Science book pages: 247- 259

Pair/Groupwork

   1. Jumping game

In this game, you will stand at a start line and jump as far as
possible.

Step 1: One person at a time, stand with toes at the start line.

Step 2: Jump as far as you can.

Step 3: have another member in your group mark where your toes
landed and measure the distance from the start line, in centimeters.
Step 4: Record the results in the table below.

Step 5: Answer the questions below the table.

Draw conclusions with your group: N
Why did your friend could reach the farthest point?

     2. Penny Toss Game

In this game, you will stand at the start line and toss a penny as
close as possible to the goal line.

Step 1: take turns tossing a penny as close as possible to the goal line.

Step 2: Measure the distance of your toss in cm from the goal line.

Step 3: Complete the table with the results.

     Step 4: Answer the questions.

 Answer…

 1. Whose penny landed closest to the goal line?________________
 2. How many children’s pennies landed less than 10 cm from the
      goal line?_______________________

Draw conclusions with your friends N
Why did your friends were so close to the goal line?

 3. Force and Speed!

Let’s have a race. Then, complete the table.

                        Force and Speed Run Race
                 Name Place
                                                      1st

                                                      5th

Let’s talk and conclude about the relation between force and
 speed.
Perimeter…

Let’s measure huge things. What about the pool and the soccer
   field?

   4. Gather in groups of 3 and measure the perimeter of the
        swimming pool.

   P= ______

   5. Now, let’s measure the perimeter of the soccer field. Gather
in groups of 4 and have fun.

P =____________
Assessment Scoring Activities

Superior Completes all of the activities with accurate answers. Shows understanding
of the measuring units and the relation with force.

Alto: Completes all the activities, at least one is incorrectly answered. Shows
some understanding of the measuring units and the relation with force.

Básico: Completes fewer than 4 activities. Shows minimal understanding of the
measuring units and the relation with force.

Bajo: Completes fewer than 2 activities . Shows no understanding of the
measuring units and the relation with force.

Time: these activities must be completed on April 12.
