What constitutes form
follows function?
The interesting thing about
this is that form never exactly
follows function. Even in
historical western
architecture, the gothic
cathedral for example, has a
floor plan shaped like a
cruciform, it was very
symbolic. But we use it as a
plan. We force the function in
it almost. Forms and function
can work together.

most likely for function to
follow form.
The gothic cathedral is
build using divine number
(given by gods), these
number are used to draft
the plans and afterwards
the construction on the
building itself. Hence the
ideas of forms following
functions is not displayed.

HAKKA HOUSE
The Hakka House, is a
circular building whereby the
entire clan resides in.
The forms of the house, is
chosen because a circular
building have no blind spot,
thus providing a greater ease
of protection from outside
enemies.
The forms is a result of the
need for protection rather
than the building’s function,
thus still not really displaying
the idea of forms following
functions.

Many buildings are built following
the form follows function principle which
suggest that the shape of a building or
space should be based upon the
indented function or purpose.
Whereas function follows form
gives a building or space a more unique
shape and form while still severing the
same purpose and function as a building
built following the form follows function
principle.

TWA FLIGHT
CENTER
TWA Flight Center, Eero Saarinen, JFK Int. Airport, New
York. This historical project has evoked the spirit of flight
for many generations. This building was made of a
revolutionary thin shell concrete structure which
continuously curves down from the ceiling to become the
walls and floor. It is said that the overall form was inspired
by a bird in flight, an appropriate form for a flight center.
In order to capture the concept of flight, Saarinen used
curves to create spaces that flowed into one another. The
exterior's concrete roof imitates a bird in flight with two
massive "wings." The interior consists of a continuous
ribbon of elements, all whisking themselves in from the
exterior, so that ceilings continously run into walls and
those walls become floors."All the curves, all the spaces
and elements right down to the shape of the signs, display
boards, railings and check-in desks were to be of a
matching nature. We wanted passengers passing through
the building to experience a fully-designed environment,
in which each part arises from another and everything
belongs to the same formal world," stated Eero Saarinen
during construction in 1959.The structure consists of a
shell of reinforced concrete with four segments that
extend outward from a central point. The concrete "wings"
then unfold on either side of the exterior, preparing for
flight. Within the concrete, the structure is reinforced with
a web of steel.

together. TWA building has the
quality of space. The quality of
a certain plasticity of a space
happens first before function
incorporates into it.
Sometimes, there is this
possibility where form beings
to give us function.

CENTER
The TWA flight center or Trans World
Flight center opened in 1962 as a
standalone terminal at New York
City’s JFK international airport.
Though portions of the original
complex, design by Eero Saarinen
have been demolished the terminal
has been renovated, partially
encircled by and serving as a
ceremonial entrance to a new
adjacent terminal completed in
2008.

REICHSTAG DOME
Norman foster designed the Reichstag
dome the same form as the original
building which was bombed in February
27,1933. An act blamed on the
Communists, despite there being little
evidence to determine who actually
started the fire.
The skeleton of the dome remians;
reminding us of the War World II.
Foster’s design statisified symbol, sign,
form and space and function as well.

Volkskammer) met in the
Palast der Republik in
East Berlin, while the
parliament of the Federal
Republic of Germany (the
Bundestag) met in the
Bundeshaus in Bonn.

To add diversity to her architectural projects, in
2002 Zahid completed the building of the ski
jump at Innsbruck, Austria. Zahid describes
the ski jump as “a concise piece of functional
design, an instrument for high performance
sport, shaped with mathematical
precision.” She created this to “develop a
seamless hybrid. The assemblage of elements
was resolved in the manner of nature,
developing a seamless hybrid, where parts are
smoothly articulated and fused into an organic
unity.”
Her ideas on her designed are organic and
possess the ability to grow and expand just
