Fossil Formation Objective: Our class will find out where most fossils are found How some fossils form
WHAT IS A FOSSIL? A clue, preserved in rock, about life that lived on earth long ago.
Types of fossils Trace fossils Mold Cast Carbon film Amber Petrified fossils
Trace fossils Show changes made in their surroundings. These long-dead animals leave evidence of their activities. Examples are the following: coprolite tracks burrows
Fossils That Form After Parts are Destroyed. Mold is an imprint of outside of a dead plant or animal. Molds form when the dead organism’s body get slowly washed out of the rock. The space left in the rock matches the shape of the dead organisms that once was there. Cast forms when sediments of minerals fill the mold and harden. The harden rock takes on the shape of the once living organisms.
Mold Cast
Whole Plants or Animals Preserved as Fossils. Whole plant or animal, including soft parts, can become a fossil. One example is Amber. Amber forms when insects get trapped in sticky clear sap of trees. The sap hardened and the whole insect is preserved. Other examples of preserving whole animal parts are tar pits and glacier ice.
Can you name an animal fossil that is known to be found in glacier ice?
If you guest Wholly Mammoth, you’re correct.
Over 40,000 years ago this baby wholly mammoth fell into a muddy iceage river.
Some fossils form when minerals replaced the original materials of the once living organisms. In many cases this occurs with tree logs. This type of fossil is called. Petrified Fossils
Review Fossils are the remains of living things that lived on Earth long ago. They are usually made of the hard parts of plants and animals. They form in several ways.
Trace fossils such as tracks, burrows, and droppings give clues to what the animal did. Mold and Cast: provide evidence of the type of organism by observing the imprint or shape of the organism’s body. Amber: preserves the whole body of the animal leaving lots of evidence of the type of organisms. Petrified Fossil: normally trees that form as the rotted wood is slowly replaced by minerals.
