- 2. 1 The animal dies and the water rises and consumes the dead animal.
- 3. 2 The flesh gets eaten by smaller creatures.
- 4. 3 The bones remain lying at the bottom of the river.
- 5. 4 The sediment (tiny pieces of sand or stone) cover the bones.
- 6. 5 Decades later, the land rises.
- 7. 6 The bones rot away.
- 8. 7 Pieces of rock fill in the gaps where the bones used to be.
- 9. 8 The bones get exposed to the world.
- 11. 10 The palaeontologist finds the fossil (most of the time this does not happen).
- 12. 11 He brushes the dust off the fossil.
- 13. 12 He carefully digs up the fossil.
- 14. 13 A process called ‘jacketing’ is done. Jacketing is wrapping plaster around the fossil to protect it from weather conditions.
- 15. 14 The palaeontologist makes a map of what he has found.
- 16. 15 He transports it to the museum.
- 17. 16 The museum puts the fossil on display.
