Foundation Diploma in
Art & Design
Camberwell, Chelsea & Wimbledon College’s of Arts
Part of University of the Arts London
Modes of Study Explained
There are two modes of study available
• The diagnostic mode allows students to spend time within each of the 3 main
pathways before specialising. This mode is the traditional Foundation course model
and is best suited to students who are not yet certain of a particular subject and
want a broad range of experience in part 1 of the course.
• The specialist mode is for students who are very confident of their future direction.
This mode allows students to apply directly to one of the 4 specialist pathways.
Applicants to this mode will therefore need an application portfolio that demonstrates
some understanding and aptitude for the specialist pathway chosen.
Things to Note
• During the portfolio review process the academic team may offer a student a
place on the course, but in a different mode to the one that has been requested
on their application form. A member of the team will discuss this decision with
the student during the review process.
• The Foundation Diploma at Camberwell does not have a Fashion and Textiles
pathway. If students are interested in Fashion and Textiles they should apply to
the Foundation Diploma at Central Saint Martins, UAL.
Specialist Mode Options
Students who choose to apply to specialist mode will have
the below pathways to select from:
• Fine Art – Drawing and Conceptual Practice, Painting,
Photography and Time-Based Media, Sculpture
• Communication - Animation and Film, Graphic
Design, Illustration
• Design: 3D Product and Spatial
• Design: For Theatre, Screen & Performance
Students will be introduced to the specialist options within
their chosen pathway.
