Review Addictive Substances
Quiz on Addictive Substances Today
Addictive Substances – substances which a person can become
dependent on. These substances are known as drugs.

Drugs may enter a human body in many different ways:
  -Swallowed (eaten, or taken orally)
  -Injected in a vein
  - Inhaled

  *Warning
We will study 5 types of drugs

1. Stimulants
2. Depressants
3. Narcotics
4. Hallucinogens
5. Inhalants
Stimulants
-Stimulants – speed up the process of the nervous system, so a
person may stay awake longer or stay excited.
-Some truck drivers take stimulants so they can drive all night
-Example stimulants: methamphetamine (=meth=speed),
       cocaine, caffeine, nicotine

                                              One year of meth use
Depressants
-Depressants –slow down the activities of the central nervous
       system
-They are taken to relax a person
-Examples: alcohol, barbiturates
-Alcohol causes slow brain activity and misjudgment…….
Narcotics

Narcotics – taken to relieve pain and make you sleep easier.
They affect the body by depressing the nervous system.

Examples: opium, heroin, morphine, codeine

                                 Heroin

                        Before and After
Hallucinogens
Hallucinogens – make you see things that are not real.

Examples: LSD, cannabis (marijuana)
Inhalants

Inhalants are sniffed or breathed as vapor

Examples: cleaning solvents, glue, paint, aerosol sprays, nitrous
oxide
Common Drugs
                    Alcohol
Slows brain activity, and leads to misjudgment and loss of
        memory
Ethanol is the type of alcohol present in beer and wine
Effects on the body: damage of the brain, unconsciousness, liver
        damage
People become easily addicted, loss of judgment leads to drunk
        driving
Common Drugs
                  Cigarettes
-Smoking – single greatest cause of preventable death
-Smoke causes lung cancer, heart diseases, bronchitis, emphysema
-There are over 19 known carcinogens in cigarette smoke
-Carcinogen = chemical that causes cancer
-The stimulant nicotine is what causes the dependence
-Nicotine damages brain tissue, causes blood clots, and hardens
artery walls
-Second hand smoke – smoke that non-smokers inhale, is harmful
        to others
-Second hand smoke causes asthma, allergies, heart and lung
disease, sore eyes, sore throat and even lung cancer
Cigarette smoke can kill other people Lung cancer X-ray
                                        Cigarette smoke damages lungs
Cigarette smoke damages teeth
