3. Numerator and Denominator
Numerator is the upper portion of the fraction. This is
the shaded region in a fraction.
Denominator is the bottom portion of a fraction. This tell
us the number of parts the whole is divided into.
13. Kinds of Fractions
Fractions are categorized into five:
1. proper fraction
2. improper fraction
3. similar fraction
4. dissimilar fraction
5. mixed number / fraction
14. Kinds of Fractions
Proper Fractions – are fractions whose numerator is lesser
than the denominator.
Examples:
1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 4/5, 5/6
15. Kinds of Fractions
Improper Fractions – are fractions whose numerator is
greater than or equal to the denominator.
Examples:
3/2, 4/3, 5/4, 6/5, 7/6
2/2, 3/3, 4/4, 5/5, 6/6

Similar Fractions – are fractions whose denominators are
the same.
Examples:
1/2, 2/2, 3/2, 4/2, 5/2
1/3, 2/3, 3/3, 4/3, 5/3

Dissimilar Fractions – are fractions whose denominators
are different.
Examples:
1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 4/5, 5/6

18. Kinds of Fractions
Mixed Numbers / Fractions – are fractions with a whole
number and a fraction part.
Examples:
2 ½, 3 ¾, 5 ½, 10 ¾, 21 ½
19. Reciprocal of a Fraction
The reciprocal of a fraction is interchanging the position
of the numerator and the denominator.
Examples:
2/3 = 3/2
3/4 = 4/3
5/6 = 6/5
20. Reciprocal of a Fraction
Whole numbers have an imaginary denominator of 1. All
whole numbers have 1 as their denominators.
Examples:
2 = 2/1 = 1/2
3 = 3/1 = 1/3
4 = 4/1 = 1/4
23. Expressing Fractions Into Lowest Term
To change or express fractions into lowest term, divide the
numerator and the denominator by their greatest
common factor.
Examples:
2/4 ÷ 2/2 = 1/2
5/10 ÷ 5/5 = 1/2
26. Changing Improper Fraction to Mixed Number
To change improper fraction to mixed number:
a. Divide the numerator by the denominator.
b. Use quotient as the whole number.
c. Use remainder as the numerator.
d. Copy the original denominator.
27. Changing Mixed Number to Improper Fraction
To change mixed number to improper fraction :
a. Multiply the denominator by the whole number.
b. Add the product to the numerator.
c. Use the sum as the new numerator.
d. Copy the original denominator.
