FIRST GENERATION
• The modern free-piston engine was proposed
by R.P.Pescara
• The original application was a single piston Air
compressor
• These first generation free-piston engines were
without exception opposed piston engines
• in which the two pistons were mechanically linked
to ensure symmetric motion.
• The free-piston engines provided some advantages
over conventional technology, including
compactness and a vibration-free design.
WHAT IS A FREE PISTON ENGINE ?
INTRODUCTION
• Free Piston Linear Engine is nothing but an engine
which works without crankshaft
• Instead of crankshaft , here an turbine and linear
alternator is used to convert the rotary motion into
reciprocating motion
• This crank less engine reduce the losses due the
crank
• In free engine generator is used to re-generator
electricity

Single Piston
Free Single Piston linear Engine
It consist of a combustion cylinder a load device and a rebound device
Which accurately control the amount of energy put into the
compression process and there by regulates the compression ratio and
stroke length. A simple design with high controllability is the main
strength of this design compared to others

• In this design, the need for a rebound device is eliminated since the working
Piston itself acts as rebound device. This allows a simple and compact
device with higher power to weight ratio.
The control of piston motion has proved difficult since small variations in
the combustion in either of the two cylinders will have high
influence on the next compression.

Opposed Piston
• This design consists of two single piston units with a
common combustion chamber.
• Each piston requires a re-bound coupled to one or both of
the pistons ensure symmetric piston motion. the main
advantages are
• Free opposed piston hydraulic pump re-bound device, and a
load device may be pistons Mechanical linkages connecting
the two balanced and vibration-free design and reduced
heat transfer losses due to the
• Elimination of the cylinder head. but, it is seen that the
need for a piston
• Synchronization mechanism together with the dual set of
the main components
• Makes the engine complicated and bulky.
• These are free piston engines feeding hot gas to a power
turbine
• The only load for the engine is that to supercharge the
intake air
• The free piston gas generator has the advantage of high
compression and pressure ratio in that arrangement the
work needed to compress to compress the intake air is e

• One (or more) combustion chamber with a single or
two opposite pistons
• One (or more) linear electric generator, which is
composed of a static part (the stator) and a moving
part (the magnets) connected to the connection
rod.
• One (or more) return unit to push the piston back
due the lack of the crankshaft (typically a gas spring
or an opposed combustion chamber)
The free-piston engine linear generators can be
divided in 3 subsystems:

assemble on to a long
shaft

EFFICIENCY OF FPLGE
In compare to a conventional reciprocating engine it gets 30 per
more efficient

• When shown in the pressure volume diagram this
maximum the air enclosed air in compression to
conventional reciprocating engine
• This means that more usefully energy is extracted
improving efficiency and fuel economy

DISADVANTAGES OF FREE-PISTON

• Poor part load efficiency
• High combustion rate

CONCLUSION
When we think of automotive technology of the future,
we usually think of alternative fuels, whether its hydrogen
or electric power from futuristic batteries. It turns out, the
future might actually be a new form of internal
combustion: the ‘free piston’ engine.
