Frequency relates to how often a sound wave repeats itself over a fixed period of time, with lower frequencies having slower vibrations and higher frequencies having faster vibrations. Frequency is measured in Hertz (Hz), with 1 Hz equaling one cycle per second. The human ear can detect frequencies between 20-20,000 Hz, with young children and women able to hear slightly higher frequencies. Timbre refers to the combination of frequencies that make up a sound. Equalizers, or EQs, are audio tools that can manipulate frequencies and timbres.
