Virtualization: How Does It Fit into Your Business? Presented by Steve Meek, CISSP, CCNA, MCSE, CCDA
Agenda Survey What is virtualization Main vendors Why virtualize Deployment basics How to manage Vmware Screenshots What to do before virtualizing vSphere 4.0 Quick slides about The Fulcrum Group, Inc. Question and answers Copyright © 2009 The Fulcrum Group Inc.
Survey How many already a virtualization solution have deployed? What is the approximate current physical server counts in the room? Less than 10 servers 11-30 servers 31 or more servers What operating systems are in use? What industries are represented in the room? Do you consider yourself a line-of-business person or an engineer? Copyright © 2009 The Fulcrum Group Inc.
What is virtualization Types of virtualization- Server, desktop, storage, networking Server virtualization is the masking of server resources, including the number and identity of individual physical servers, processors, and operating systems, from server users. Allows multiple operating systems to run on the same physical computer at the same time Various implementations- sensitive instructions replaced by binary translation or trapped by hardware, OS allows for multiple user-space instances IBM- System 360 Copyright © 2009 The Fulcrum Group Inc.
Definitions Host - The physical computer on which the virtual machine(s) are configured or run Virtual machine (Guest OS, VM)- The “computer” that runs as virtual machine software on the host computer Virtual disk- One or more files that reside on the host computer that make up the VM’s hard disk Virtual network- The network configuration used by the VM to tell it how to work with the network Datastore- Logical storage unit, which can use disk space on one physical device or one disk partition Snapshot- A copy of a VM at a particular moment in time Service Console- Vmware console access using Alt-F1 Infrastructure client- Download to manage hosts/VMs Note: some Vmware terminology is changing in ESX 4.0 Copyright © 2009 The Fulcrum Group Inc.
Main Vendors EMC/Vmware- ESX server 3.5, but version 4 vSphere recently released (ESXi is free but designed for standalone server) Microsoft- Hyper-V, R2 slated for Q3 2009 (free with Windows 2008 x64) Citrix- Xen 5.5 available today For more details, check comparisons at http://www.it20.info/misc/virtualizationscomparison.htm or http://www.vmguru.nl/wordpress/2009/04/hypervisor-comparison/ Copyright © 2009 The Fulcrum Group Inc.

Why virtualize servers Reduce physical server sprawl (>30m physical servers, 40x next 10 yrs., sometimes you increase count of virtual servers) To provide OS/application isolation (Exchange 2007, Sharepoint, specialty applications, x64 OSes) Share server resources (lower hardware costs, redundancy) Reduce power consumption (every $1 spent on hw. 50c power/cooling) Reduce space requirements (data centers AND small offices) Rapid server spin up (as long as capacity there) Hardware independence (snapshots can run on any hardware means portability) Looking at other DR/BC reasons (snapshots, Vmotion, DR site) Business agility Create cloud services Copyright © 2009 The Fulcrum Group Inc.
What studies say Copyright © 2009 The Fulcrum Group Inc. Aiming for business agility Overwhelming complexity >70% of IT budgets just to keep the lights on <30% of IT budgets goes to innovation and competitive advantage Business Can Change Only as Fast as IT Can Where the IT Budget Goes Source: VMware Fortune 100 Customers 42% Infrastructure Maintenance 30% Application Maintenance 23% Application Investment 5% Infrastructure Investment
Deploying Vmware Virtual Infrastructure Methodology Assess Plan Build Manage Copyright © 2009 The Fulcrum Group Inc.
Deploying Vmware Inventory analysis to exclude ineligible candidates Look at system architecture, OS, specialized peripherals, compute requirements Review current core resources- CPU (# CPUs, # cores, speed) memory (RAM size, page file size) disk (disk size, OS and app data separate from data, is external storage DAS, NAS, SAN, available capacity) NIC (number NICs and speed, VLAN info) Collect performance data (remember, you’re consolidating) CPU (sum needed CPU cycles for all VMs) memory (sum needed RAM maxima for all VMs) disk (sum needed disk for all VMs, VM swap) NIC (sum needed bandwidth for all VMs) Categorize according to priority Qualified candidates- low util, no obvious barriers, (DCs, file, web servers) Semi-qualified- more complex cfg, resource requirements (db servers, high util app svrs, clustered apps Ineligible- Copyright © 2009 The Fulcrum Group Inc.
Why not virtualize Determine if virtualization is right for you Copyright © 2009 The Fulcrum Group Inc. ISSUE DIFFERENT POSSIBLE SOLUTION Convert dying hardware to virtual Server imaging tools can migrate to new physical hardware Create a manual DR backup Can automate with data replication software Virtualize high IO application Upgrade to beefier physical hardware Rapid turnup of multiple servers Blade solutions may offer needed performance Assume VM is best DR solution Explore traditional cluster, NLB or app specific options
Managing Vmware Basically five ways to do manage Vmware environment Service Console on main screen (command line) SSH in the server (user must be configured to allow) Web access to IP of host Infrastructure/vSphere client connect direct to host Infrastructure/vSphere client connect to Virtual Center/vCenter for control of all hosts/VMs Copyright © 2009 The Fulcrum Group Inc.

Questions before virtualizing Check with your software vendors and make sure they support virtualization True your network first- make sure DNS, AD, IP are correct May need to enhance your infrastructure (multiple interfaces on Vmware hosts, will you have guests on different VLANs) Understand your storage needs (if basic, DAS may handle, if Vmotion or resource balancing, SAN is critical) Consider licensing needs besides chosen Vm solution (Microsoft Open License makes tracking OS easier) Will this change your Power, UPS, space, cooling needs What about backup of VMs or other DR needs Will you be able enhance your skills with Linux, Vmware… What is your network management and monitoring strategy *** Make sure your write/draw out your plan before starting *** Copyright © 2009 The Fulcrum Group Inc.
About Vmware vSphere 4 Copyright © 2009 The Fulcrum Group Inc. VMware® ESX™/ESXi Description • Proven, high performance bare metal hypervisor • Unique CPU and memory optimization features that enable highest consolidation rations • Optimized for the highest network and storage throughput Benefits • Delivers high consolidation ratios leading to the highest capital expenditure savings • Easily runs the most intense applications at very high throughput rates VMware vSMP (8-way) Description Allows a single virtual machine to use up to 8 virtual CPUs at a time (this was previously 4 vCPUs in VI3) Benefit Allows for the most compute intensive applications to be run as virtual machines
vSphere 4 changes Copyright © 2009 The Fulcrum Group Inc. Change the name from “VMware Infrastructure” to “VMware vSphere” Significant new features at all price points Introduce new editions and new price points: vSphere Essentials editions for small and remote offices vSphere Standard at a new, lower price point vSphere Advanced for high availability at a mid-range price point vSphere Enterprise Plus at a new top price point End-of-Availability for old editions: Foundation immediate end-of-availability Enterprise availability continues during a transition period Eliminate most a-la-carte offerings Switch to one processor pricing

Generally the are three ways of computing Traditional client-server Server-based computing (Citrix, TS) Desktop virtualization My advice if client-server doesn’t fit, then to do SBC unless you can’t avoid it (application isolation issues) VDI is usually more expensive, but can be great for Centralized management OS migrations When you have groups of standardized machines For green initiatives For end point independence (PC, Mac, tablet, Linux, thin client)
